I'm applying at this local clothing store and this would be my first job ever.I currently have an application in hand and it's asking me to list previous work experience as well as list 3 references. Do you think I can get by in the application without having to list any references or previous work experience since I have none whatsoever. Are those things necessary to get hired if it's your first job?

List family friends who can talk about your character. These should be people who have a good reputation in the community who are mature and can speak professionally about how they have interacted with you over the years.

You may not have previous experience, but you should put down references. They should be people who can speak to your character. And they should be non-relatives. Some people to consider: a friend's mother, a teacher or school counselor, a sports coach. Please keep in mind that any references you use should be asked first before you put their name down. There's nothing worse than getting a call asking for a recommendation that you didn't know was coming.

How can an employer expect references if this is your first job?
Sometimes schools provide a character reference, and also an upstanding professional member of the public, but only if the job requires a certain quality.

You dont' need to list prior work experience, but I would use teachers or maybe a pastor or priest from your local church. People of influence would be better as reference than family of friends.

Use character references from people who know you. If you are a school-leaver, include favourable school reports.
