They'll feed off you!! Also, the eggs can lay dormant for as long as they need to. You need to spray your house at least once, the eggs are tough and you may need to wait for them to hatch before you can kill them with spray.
Spray once to kill the adult fleas. Turn up your heating to encourage remaining eggs to hatch, then spray again to kill them. Don't use pet store products!!

The average life span for a flea is 30-90 days average. Some fleas can live as long as a year and a half (with the right conditions and food to live off of). Probably the least amount of time would be 3 weeks so I'd say it's going to be around 30 days for the fleas to die. But the other problem comes up... The flea eggs will hatch and it will be about another 30 days for them to die. If they are in your house, you can pick up a can of Raid flea killing spray that kills very well. It will take 2 times to kill them because of the eggs.

Just because you got rid of your dog does not mean that after a few weeks or months your flea problem will disappear.
Once the flea reaches adulthood its primary goal is to find blood - adult fleas must feed on blood in order to reproduce. They can survive two months to a year between meals. A flea population is unevenly distributed, with 50 percent eggs, 35 percent larvae, 10 percent pupae and 5 percent adults. Their total life cycle can take as little as two weeks, but may be lengthened to many months if conditions are favourable. Female fleas can lay 500 or more eggs over their life, allowing for phenomenal growth rates.
You will need to treat your home and its furnishings as if you still have a dog. If you don't then the flea cycle can still possibly carry on.
As for how long this should continue.....
....treat your home, keeping it well vaccumed each day and wait it out. If you notice one or two fleas continue....wait.

hi lisa for u to have had to rehome your dog means u had severe infestation if that is the case invariably things like Carpets have to be binned and chairs have to be doused in flea powder before vacuuming. but not the kids or your husband , if any. The fleas will disappear in time but you will never feel safe until u have cleansed every nook and cranny. Very sorry to hear about the dog

Bad news for you, Chalice is right!
Fleas feed off warm blooded mammals, and you qualify!
You need to treat the house and kill the fleas, or the problem will never go away.

From what I understand they live 6 months to a year. A simple, inexpensive way to get rid of them is to get a small bowl and fill it with dish soap and water...put a small bright light over it during the night and they will commit mass suicide. Mmm
