Yes
If you allow it to
Yes it is highly recommended to have your Bodeaux trained
I have met the two extremes
A trained dog is a good dog

NOTE: No such thing as a "dry mouthed" bordeaux... if they don't drool it is because of poor breeding because that means their head is not properly shaped. Same rule goes for Saints and Newfs.

I have Dogues and they are in my opinion the best dogs I could ever hope to have.

They drool after they have taken a big drink of water, other than that not really, they are easy on furniture as you must understand the Bordeaux is a mollosser......a descendant of an ancient giant dog the Greeks and Romans used to use. They are bred for guarding and used as an Auxiliary warrior in times of war. Thus they are not at all the hyper type. They spend most of their day being lazy and chewing on their bones and such. They are large and believe me...they know it, and this is an advantage for you because they will not need to be aggressive with other people to prove that they are strong enough to bring them down. That is why you never hear of these dogs biting humans. They are born confident and have zero fear, which makes them class A guard dogs (my first female was only 5 months old with no training and she knew how to guard my house)

I have a border collie that will try and bite me if I get too close to his ears. I don't have this problem with my Bordeaux because they have a very high pain threshold from their fighting days, they can easily stand up to all of the ear pulling and hard petting and such that children do to pets. I can go up to my Bordeaux and rattle her and pull her ears and her jowls and try to annoy her to high heaven and she will just give me this blank stare like "what are you doing, just leave me alone"

Anything that you will ever read will tell you that the Bordeaux is a very intelligent dog that quote "never forgets what he is taught"

The Dogue de Bordeaux is considered a class 2 fighting/guard dog, their size, surprisingly amazing athletics and bulldog strength bite, wrapped up in a package that is lower to the ground than any molosser pound for pound makes them a formidable guard dog. The Bordeaux has been around for almost 2500 years, one of the most ancient molosser dogs alive today..........I guess they have to be doing something right to have been around for so long.

My girl did not drool and her mother was a non-drooling, the rest of her siblings (7 all together) does drool. She would chew something as a pup that would be left on the floor, such as new boots, slippers, never furniture.. I wold reccommend training only because they get to be such a big dog..
never owned a Doberman so cant tell you if they are as good as one.. I know no other dog I have owned thus far have been as good as my Boxer was (he passed Sept. 30th).. he was the best boy ever.. Also, Dogues usually take to only one person in the house as a companion, she loved me but would be not as loving around her daddy..

Any of the larger breeds have the potential to drool. If you are looking at the movie Turner and Hooch, that movie was a drastic over exaggeration. Any dog can destroy furniture if allowed to. A larger dog, just does it on a larger scale. Most larger breeds can be quite determined and MUST have training. This is not a dog the dog to get if you have never handled larger breeds. Yes it is a great dog with the proper training and handling. Like any breed they are much a matter of preference as far as "good". Is concerned as anyone here and they will tell you their breed of dog is best.
Good Luck with your choice
