How can I get my two very small dogs and the newly adopted kitten to get along? I'm scared the dogs might scare the kitten, but I really want one. Is there anything I can do to make things easier between the two. My dogs havent ever been around a smaller animal than them.

i always hold the kitten so the kitten is facing you and let the dogs smell the cat. make sure you protect the kitten, though. i then give the kitten a safe place to be, like the bathroom, with their litter box and food and water. keep the door shut for a day or 2 to let the cat adjust then only leave the door open when you can supervise so the animals will get used to each other.

I think if your dogs are very small and friendly, it should work out fine. The biggest risk is probably the kitty taking a swipe at the dogs. You might cat test your dogs with a cat that is used to being around dogs first (do you have friend that has a cat that is used to dogs? - or possibly your local animal shelter or humane society can help). Supervise closely during the early stages after you get a kitten so no one gets hurt. Kitten raised with dogs usually end up learning to accept dogs and if your dogs are low prey drive (don't tend to chase smaller animals) - it could be OK. The breeds I'd be most concerned about would be dachshunds and terriers - which are bred to kill small animals - if your dogs are not those breeds, your odds of success are better.

I brought a kitten into the house with two small dogs. I called the breeder who said be careful they might try to skin the kitten (YIKES). I put the kitten in a room with the door closed for a week, the dogs were very curious and spent nearly all day outside the door sniffing. Then I brought the kitten out into the living room with the french doors closed and let him sniff around and slowly opened the doors. They came charging out towards the kitten (with me perched over the kitten to scoop him up) who stood his ground, hissing. He was so small, he fitted into the palm of my hand. That was day one with the kitten exposed to the dogs and I think it took about a month before I was comfortable that they wouldn't "skin" him.. They all became very good friends, the dogs would groom the cat and they all slept together. The two Terriers I have now chase him, team tag him and generally don't want him in the same room. So, I suppose it depends on the breed - the 1st two were Welsh Corgis.

If the dogs are young, I think that the kitten will be just fine. I have two cats and a dog and one cat and the dog grew up together and the other came along a year ago. They all get along well. Also, my aunt has 3 cats and recently adopted an Akita and the dog fits in well with the cat/kittens.

Dogs and cats usually get along, actually. *Usually*

But generally its easier if they've grown up together (ie: it will be easier for the kitten than for your dogs, since they haven't grown up around smaller animals). If you get a kitten, get your dogs used to him/her in a protected way at first. Hold the kitten, have someone else hold the dogs, and let them just look at each other for awhile. Once they seem fine with that, let them touch noses, but be ready to pull them away from each other in a nano-second. Once your dogs are used to it, there shouldn't be a problem. There's a chance they'd be fine with a kitten immediately (maybe excited, but not aggressive). But until you're sure, keep them separated/in different rooms except when you're with them and in FULL control of the situation.

u gotta put a lil wall between them first if u do. but first make sure the puppies arnt murderess. give them a small toy first and see what happens in a week. then you might jst know if u should get a kitten or not! lol then comes testing the kitten. squirt it with a lil water bottle on its tail once JUST ONCE with a lil misty part if its bad. but not unless its really bad!

I would think they would get along, the kitten will defend itself and they will learn to love each other and get along after a little while

You have a problem, cause dogs doesn't like kitten., and vice versa.
Maybe you could be lucky, but I would stay there for a while to find out.

kittens can climb so I had put up a baby gate in teh bathroom which is where I have the litter box and food. the kitten can come and go as wants and they can 't get inl It gives teh kitten it's own place.
Also intro duce them slowly.
