Too much sorbitol has a laxative effect.
You really must be chewing a lot of gum!

Eating Gum isn't too good for you anyways, especially at five peices a day. When you chew gum, your mouth produces saliva because your body thinks you're eating something, so in turn, your stomach produces acid, to help aid the breakdown of the food that it thinks you will be swallowing. Because you're not actually eating anything the acid will sit in your stomach for longer and can cause problems such as stomach ulcers. And all chewing gum has laxatives in anyways, and it there isn't anything to actually come out (LOL) it will end up just being water, resulting in your typical diarrhea. :)

I have read where some of the artificial sweeteners in gum can act as a laxative. A link to a medical site is attached, with information that explains how the sweetener in the gum affects the digestive system (read the third paragraph beginning with "Osmotic ....")

Try not chewing any gum for awhile and see if this helps. If not, then it would be a good idea to see your doctor.

Too much sorbitol (from 10 to 50g, or more for adults) can cause gastro-intestinal problems - it's unlikely that you are consuming enough gum to cause problems though. However sorbitol is added to other foods so check out the ingredients on other things that you eat regularly. If symptoms persist then go and see a doctor. Check out the link below for more info about the side effects of sorbitol.

Sorbitol, maltitol and mannitol are all sugar alcohols and may cause diarrhoea. If you are only having five pieces a day I doubt it. After writing down this horrendous list of ingredients I am surprised you have not given it up!! Try stopping and see if the squitts clear up. Try eating fruit instead.

I have eaten the very same gum and it did not affect my digestive system.

As one of the other gals mentioned, it could be the aspartame. There are serveral side effects of this artificial sweetner - especially if consumed in larger amounts. For example, nausea, diarrha (sometimes w/ blood), abdominal pain, headaches...the list goes on.
