they need it for comfort, because they can't cope with this life being all they have. it deppresses them, for some reason... and yet they do nothing with it... that's more depressing than anything.

Death is the continuation of spiritual life with God. The death you are referring to is the demise of the physical body which must occur because the body mass is derived from perishable materials ( food ). The real you ( the spirit of God in you at conception) which defines you and makes you different from any other person on earth will never die. Moreover, you fail to realise that you have been in spiritual existence with God even before your physical manifestation on earth and this cycle of spiritual existence will continue at death when your spirit will go back to God. Therefore, physical existence on earth can be described as an era in your spiritual journey to eternity.

People don't always need real solid proof, in order to know that believing in something, has a positive affect on their ability to cope with life, to get better when sick, and to help when one is trying to hang on in a crisis. One spiritual senses sometimes get dulled by over indulgence and an excessive focus on materialism. To sharpen ones spiritual intuitive senses meditate/pray, do mind-body exercises, eat healthy, and don't over indulge. Read up on the amazing things that have happened to spiritual believers, to help them survive extreme conditions or avoid disaster. This might inspire you. But don't feel you have to accept traditional religions' version of God. Develop your own version that works for you, our good and very moral God won't mind.

Perhaps it is human nature not to chalk it up to fate when glorious or horrendous life events happen.

Might there be an emotional need to thank something or someone for the good, along with a desire to forgive and forget the hardships?

It gives (incorrect) answers to questions that cant currently be explained by science and provides comforting alternatives to the finality of death.

Religious belief is actually a mind virus that inhabits the brains of otherwise normal people and causes them to behave in a deluded, irrational way.

Life.

People are always trying to kill you if you don't believe in their god. So the point is, its always good to believe in which ever god the person holding the gun believes in.

This is basically what the Christian idea of hell is about.... only their god also has a spiritual gun to your head.

Don't worry about the afterlife though, thats all lies.
Worry about this one and believe what will keep you alive and happy.

People are disturbed by the fact that they're lives really have no purpose other than to proliferate. So they use religion to motivate themselves and other who follow that same religion. The problem is that some find their religion more right than others and use force to express that belief; hence, war.

I would rather spend my life in devotion to the Lord and die tomorrow to find out there isn't a God, than to live my life rebelling against the Lord and to have died tomorrow only to find out that there is a God.

God wants you to have "faith". That's why there's just enough information and miracles to make you keep asking questions. He wanted to prove he was real so he had Jesus perform a few miracles and speak of God. Not to mention his death and Resurrection. So you'll know he's there and capable. Now he wants you to have a relationship and "faith" in him.

Man has always required an explanation for all of those things in the world he did not understand. If an explanation was not available, he created one.
