The most unfortunate impact of the so-called Enlightenment?
It attempted to dethrone a perfect, all-powerful and loving God and put sinful, weak men in His place.
The Enlightenment gave birth to liberalism, socialism and Communism. They all share a common flawed goal - the attempt to realise a paradise in this world by human efforts alone.
There are even some that believe democracy will be the salvation of man. Look at the way President Wilson, and now President Bush, are trying to force it on the world like it was a religion.

The development of secular government, through the writings of Locke, Madison and Jefferson the western world has created largely secular governments.
This has led to increasing freedoms (though we are not all the way there yet), increased wealth and has minimized theocratic dogmatism.
Good stuff.
