I guess you are definitely NOT a cat person!
I really can't understand why sleeping in your mulch is a problem they probably like the smell. If you spray a citrus mixture on your mulch the cats will probably avoid it as they do not enjoy citrus.
If these are stray cats that have besieged you and you are going to send them to the shelter PLEASE make sure it is a no-kill shelter. They are just living their lives and to trap them to kill them is an absolutely horrible thing to do.
Maybe you can find a local rescue person to assist you -- there are all kinds of them popping up everywhere. They will trap them - spay/neuter them and then adopt them out or release them depending upon the situation. At least that way there would be an end to the population.
Please be patient with these cats. They did not ask for their life to be what it is and they certainly don't think they are doing any harm to you. If anything it sounds as though they consider your house a safe haven. With a bit of time and some assistance you can change this - with a better outcome than taking them all to the shelter.

Cat pee doesn't hurt plants, the neighborhood strays use my front flower garden all the time and it's a virtual jungle, it grows so good!
Mulch won't be damaged either. Pressing it down won't hurt what's underneath. I don't really view this as a problem except for maybe the cats having babies on your porch--is it enclosed? Cats don't have kittens in areas that don't have some sort of protection to offer them. Personally I'd set a box on it for them, with some towels, and let the mom have her family in peace. She'll move them away after a few weeks anyway.

Two things might help -- first, all the cats I have known *hate* the smell of orange peel. Although you can put orange peels around the area that they hang out, they tend to dry out and lose efficacy, so a better solution is to get some bergamot oil (most natural foods stores carry it in with their other essential oils) and dab it around the areas they hang out. They won't want to hang out there for long. You may need to reapply the oil every few days as it diffuses.
The second thing is to get a spray bottle or a water pistol, and give the cats a good spritz whenever you see them on your property. It's harmless, but they'll hate it -- I've found a water bottle to be just about the only way to train my cat to stop doing something. I'd use this along with dabbing the oil around the area -- the oil should help in the short-term, but the spray bottle is a lesson they'll remember for longer.
And if you have the time and money, you could even get a motion-sensitive sprinkler -- that would keep them away for good!

Oh I had this problem I bought a house that no one lived in for a while. The stray cats took over. The neighbors fed them all the time. They even cut our fence so the cats had an easier path. The lived under my porch which became a big kitty litter box. They pooped all over my yard. It was a mess.
I unfortunately had to buy a live trap the city I lived in was kind enough to take them to the humane society for me, because it would have cost me. So what I am saying is Good Luck.

Use mothballs. The kind used in closets to keep moths at bay. Seems cats don't care for the smell either. Put them about 6 inches apart under the mulch but not totally buried. Not sure about your porch but you could try. Hope this helps.

I would be delighted if cats visited me, but I am a cat person. I don't think the moth ball thing is good because I have read that moth balls can be toxic so unless you want to poison the kitties--not a good idea. I had a neighbor cat have it's kittens in my garage once. I was thrilled!!! It is funny how differently people view things.

ask your neighbors who own the cats to keep them in their yards b/c they are ruining your flowerbeds. give them a week and then call animal control, and say that cats have been wandering on your property, and you want them removed. also tell them that you have talked to the neighbors....and that they aren't complying, and that you would like the animals to stay off your property.
