Most likely they are trying to serve a subpoena to you.
Many subpoenas require that they serve them to you in person. It could before many reasons. Either as a witness in court or someone has named you in a law suit.

The police/sheriff want to serve you with some civil process...like a subpoena or somebody has filed a civil suit against you.
Give them a call and ask them what they want...they will tell you and you can go from there.
