I quit cold turkey. But that is not for everyone. Though it was easier than I had expected. And every day you feel better.
But the relatively new prescription drug Chantix works very well, I was told by my doctor. Basically, it takes any "fun" and pleasure out of smoking. Smokers often feel a sense of calm and relief when they light up. With chantix, they don't feel these sensations. Chantix also lessens the withdrawal symptoms, which often are very severe for some. It also makes you not want to smoke. Check it out at http://www.chantix.com/content/Chantix_Branded_Homepage.jsp?setShowOn=../content/Chantix_Branded_Homepage.jsp&setShowHighlightOn=../content/Chantix_Branded_Homepage.jsp
One takes it for 12 weeks, though quite a few people supposedly quit after a month. It is expensive, so check with your insurance if they would pay for it. In England it is called Champix.

Best of luck to you!!!

I quit about 3 months ago. I've tried to quit off and on for years. I've tried the patch, gum, hypnosis, tapes, did I forget anything? I had a mild heart attack in July and, after getting out of the hospital, I bought Chantix. I haven't smoked since, but I think it was more a matter of finally convincing myself that I wanted and needed to quit more than the medication. I go to the gym 5 days a week and that ebbs my urge to smoke. The roughest part was breaking the habit of lighting up when I poured my morning coffee. I still find myself reaching in my pocket for a cigarette on occasion. If you can make it through one day you can make it through two without a cigarette. It's making it through the first day that starts the journey. Change your morning habits.

All good answers. You could also try inositol hexaphosphate. It's a vitamin and you can get it at most good health food stores. It attaches to the same receptors that the nicatine attaches to and hence takes the place of smokes. It is also calming. Good luck, abut $10 a bottle. take care.
