Will it hurt it? No.

When you invert the speaker, the sound waves are now being pushed towards the inside of the box (in timing with the other speakers) so it's not as loud -the bass sound waves are hitting your ears at different times cause the sound is pointed towards the inside of the box.
180 degree phase shift is when the amp reverses the + and - around. It's the same as you swapping the wires around.
When you switch the + and - wires around to the sub, you are reversing the direction, so the sub is back to firing to the outside of the box. This is why it gets louder when you switch the phase. -It's firing in the direction it should be, away from the box.

Have Fun!

The rear of the woofer produces the same sound as the front of the woofer, so there shouldn't be a problem. The reason it sounds different when inverted is that by removing the basket and magnet structure, you're making the air space in the enclosure slightly larger. As the other post said, reverse the (+) and (-) connections on the speaker when it's inverted.

well there is a reason why the magnet of the box goes in side cuz it bumps more cuz the air waves bounce around the box a lot more faster so it bumps louder than out the box people that flip them is for show to make look nice

it should be fine if the sub is inverted but reverse the polarity
