They tithed 1/10 of the produce. Of course during a famine they gave what they could spare.

Since the days of old there has been gold and silver exchanging hands for products and services.
But God in the old testiment told the children of Israel very specifically what and how they should tithe. It wasn't just money but it was thew first friuts of all their increase and the best of of their increase.
God wants the best that you have. If money is the best that you have you don't have much. But alittle is better than none.
In the new testament God first of all wants your whole heart to be true to Him in everyway.
And when you get that part right then you can start on all the other parts. But you do need to start somewhere.
In the old Testament people were commanded to Love the Lord your God with all your heart ,mind soul and body and spirit. And in the present day New Testament we are to do the same.
When you give all to the Lord that is when you see the Lord give all back to you. It is sweet so give Him your all today and every day so He can give you His all.

Leviticus 27:30-33
'A tithe of everything from the land, whether grain from the soil or fruit from the trees, belongs to the LORD; it is holy to the LORD. If a man redeems any of his tithe, he must add a fifth of the value to it. The entire tithe of the herd and flock—every tenth animal that passes under the shepherd's rod—will be holy to the LORD. He must not pick out the good from the bad or make any substitution. If he does make a substitution, both the animal and its substitute become holy and cannot be redeemed.
There you go!

Money has been around nearly from the beginning, but was not in as widespread use as it is today.
People back then tithed of the new crops grown that year and the new animal born. These things were brought to a storehouse to be used in helping those who were less fortunate.

if they raised produce 1/10 of the weight of the harvest. or 1/10 of the quantity. 100 carrots - 10 carrots to the store house. This provide the living for the Levites who were the priesthood.
if they raised livestock one-tenth of the animals or the value of the animal in the current currency. they did use some coins.

In rural societies without a cash economy (as existed in some areas during the Dark Ages), priests were given 10% of all food harvested and animals slaughtered.

In Numbers 31, the Jewish captors killed thousands of captive mothers, and young boys. They did however, remember to tithe the remaining virgin girls so that the priests received their 10%.
Sounds crazy but read it. God wanted virgin tithes.

Nine days to the husband, One day to the Priest. Nine days to the wife, one day to the bit on the side. Nine days to Number one, One to selfless giving.
Simple formula. It will always work.
