I prefer Vista and have had most every system since 1988. Like the way it stacks pages. However, you need at least 2GB ram and as many rpm's as you can afford. There is a learning curve if you go Vista.

I liked XP too and I cried when my desktop died. I was nervous about getting Vista, so much so I almost bought a Mac. But I recently bought a Dell Inspiron 1520 with Vista Home Basic and it has not peeved me off nearly as much as I thought it would. The only big irritant was getting used to the different menus after so many years of XP.
You can still get XP. The only problem is than Microsoft will probably slowly fade it out so that Vista is your only option.

Vista is not very compatible with what's currently out there (which means you will have issues). Also, if you get office 2007 you will have issues. So if you must get Vista (which eventually should be the norm but not yet) then get office 2003 or earlier.

Don't go with Vista at least for another year or 2. It still has tons of bugs in it. I'm probably going to stick with XP for at least 2 more years or until reveiws go up and prices go down.

i would wait another 6 months to a year before moving to Vista, i have worked with it, sometimes its fine but not all applications are vista compatable just yet. to play it safe go with XP. you might be jsut fine with Vista if you decide to take that route. jsut be sure to runt eh updates frequently

xp!
for another year at least.
vista will be a good system in a year or so when all the damn bugs and security issues are fixed and compatibility solved. and more importantly, when generally the majority of computers will be able to carry vista without turning into pentiumII half way.
but like this, it's still a latent beta. we all know it's not ready for full distro, but we all pretend like it is.

dont know why you need a new one, but you can order one with either vista or xp installed. because vista is't selling well. must be a reason.
