As an American you need to have a visa to travel to India but marrying an Indian will mean that you have a valid reason to go thereat and the visa will be easily issued in your favor.

The American may always get a visitor's visa assuming all is equal.

Getting a work visa while being married to an Indian citizen would be more likely to happen.

I don't know the laws of India - maybe you should ask this on their site.
