When I was little my uncle had a chocolate lab and he told me they call them "chocolate labs" because they taste like chocolate, and unfortunatly I believe him....they are sweet! Whatever dog you feel most comfortable with. When I got my dog he just turned over on his back in my arms begging me to pet him, and I knew he was the right one.

Okay first of all, don't listen to that Tammy person above me who said they have never met a black lab that wasn't 'problematic' - that is so absurd!!!!
I have a 3.5 year old black lab and he is the first dog I have ever raised. He is my best friend, my world. He's so smart, loving, so happy with life, very easy going, great with everyone, nothing bothers him, and is just a joy to be near. He has more friends than I do in fact, lol. Labs do need a lot of play time and running around time, so if you're not really up to that, maybe a lab isn't best for you. But if you're active and want to get out there and experience life like you've never have before - get a lab! :) Really, my lab has changed my whole perspective on life and the meaning of love. We're adopting another lab (lab mix puppy) and bringing him home in 3 weeks and can't wait! :)
EDIT: oops forgot to add what you should look for! You should look for a very friendly lab! You want a lab that looks confident and willing to approach anyone and is friendly, friendly, friendly. Good luck to you!

I would not recommend a lab as a first pet. Crossbred labs are a disaster and purbreds need firm handling or they can become manic. I believe it is because of the way these 'coloured' labs have been bred to get the clour, you only ever used to see golden labs and they were fine. I do not know one chocolate or black lab which has not been problematic. If you are determined to get a chocolate lab, go to a reputable breeder (kennel club can give you list of registered breeders), see both parents, what are their temperaments like, have they been hip scored etc? If you can, take someone with you who has experience with dogs and listen to their advice. Very often a breeder will pass on a 'problem' dog to someone they know to be 'green' about dogs. Also, if you do get one, get insurance immediately, but make sure it is "cover for life". This means that your dog will be covered for anything no matter how many times he may suffer from the same ailment, not just covered for the first year of occurance. Good luck.

Labs are good dogs. If you go to a pet store or a book store, grab a book on labs. It will tell you what to look for. Thing like what to ask a breeder before purchasing, it will explain their personalities, their physical traits, how to train them etc.

They are very smart and cute but they also require a lot of exercise time, attention and they get really big. Make sure whatever you do that you are willing to spend a lot of time with this dog and can afford the food and vet bills. Labs will be loyal to you forever.

Labs are highly intelligent but if they aren't properly trained they are a accident waiting to happen so yes they are good first time pets if you willing to take on the responsibility of training them

Keep in mind your "first pet" will be with you for about 10-15+ years... So don't think of it as a "first pet"... just "pet"/friend/whatever.
Anyway, you (hopefully) choose your friends because you get along and connect with them. Same reason you should choose a dog.

If you like an animal that is completely, ridiculously exhuberant and loving and disregards your personal space, yes, they are great first pets. If you're looking for something a little less SOHAPPYTOBEHERE!!! you might try something else. *lol* Labs are good for those who don't mind doggy kisses all the time.

do you have enough time to commit? these dogs need lots of exercise.
