I work in recruiting and deal with this all the time, beleive it or not it IS more common than many people think... you need to turn your self in to the nearest military installation.. you may be sent back to your basic training site to be properly out processed and discharged, if not they will do this paperwork in your state, you will then receive an RE-3 other than honorable discharge which will turn into an RE-1 honorable after 7 years. According to the UCMJ dessertion IS punishable by death, however this is different and that maximum penalty isnt held up much any more.

Well, you would probably do better to turn yourself in to a local military base, military police. Back in the day they would track you down and send you to Fort Leavenworth (prison) but they don't really do that anymore, they pretty much just let you go, at least physically. The problem is, anyone who needs to look seriously into your background in the future might very well come across this, which is obviously not good. By turning yourself in you could go through a "process" whereby you get a discharge and close the loop on the whole thing. You might just get a general discharge, or general under honorable conditions, but that's a hell of a lot better than showing up 18 years from now as AWOL from the military. I guess my point is...close the loop.

If you commander will not help contact your congressman and the military IG (Inspector General). Your commander is not the final say on all issues. If you have military doctor recommendations for discharge then they should abide by what the doctors are saying.

Going AWOL was not the smartest thing to do. Like it has been said go back and turn yourself in before it gets any worse.

What you need to do is turn yourself into the nearest active duty military installation. If you are in basic training, you will go to either FT Knox, or Ft Sill and be processed out of the military. I dont care what reason you left, your a dumbass. Believe me, I have heard all the excuses, I am what you would call an expert on the situation. And no matter what you do, do not call the gi rights hotline, all they will do is ensure that you get a felony warrant out for your arrest. Turn yourself in.

turn yourself in before 30 days are up. You went awol from basic you might be able to pull a failure to adapt discharge. It is not a honorable, or dishonorable discharge. You just go back to being a civilian no veteran benifits but without the stigma of OTH.

I knew one person to go UA from the Marine boot camp at Paris Island. I actually met that man. He got off the bus, took one look around and walked off. He still had his civilian hair cut and street clothes so he walked right out the front gate. He stayed missing for about a year and then turned himself in. He was put through the whole 9 yards. Got the hair cut, the uniform, everything then he was put in PCP (Protective Custody Platoon) for a fairly long time then he was released and put into a platoon to await for a general discharge.

This website is a really good resource for those trying to obtain a discharge of any kind: http://www.objector.org/girights/getting-out.html

You aren't necessarily screwed for life, but the situation sounds tricky. The organization I linked can talk to you, and help you confidentially. I've personally never used it, but have known people they've helped.

Commanders ALWAYS say that, they are NOT. Turn yourself in NOW!!!! The longer you wait, the MUCH worse the penalty will be. If it has been more than 30 days already, contact an Attorney to review your rights.

You can turn yourself in, that's what I would advise you to do. They will hold a military court, official or office hours. You would have the right for a military attorney to represent you. You will probably see a discharge, but not under honarable conditions. Don't let this hang over your head for so long, just turn yourself in.

Good luck.

After 30 days you are considered a deserter. With that comes jail time. Go back to minimize the punishment. Go through boot camp and get out from under his command then deal with it.
Or contact your senator and congressman and tell them the situation. Get back to boot camp.
