I've had bad experience with fleas with my last dog back in 1992. I know many things have changed and medicine got much better in treating and preventing flea problems on dogs. This Friday is the day for our families new addition (8 weeks old golden retriever is coming). In your experience, which flea/tick preventive product is the best for Golden Retriver? All my neighbers have a dog or dogs but they told me that their dog(s) do not have much of problem, however, I do see many cats (do not know if they are stray cats or not) in the area.

All comments are welcome and thank you in advance for your answers.

For a pup that young I highly recomend Frontline. Then when the pup gets older either Frontline Plus or K9 Advantix. This is what I have been using for many. many years and found it to be very good with my Golden's.

The same treatments that are good for any breed of dog or cat - Frontline, Revolution, Advantage or Advocate. All of these are good.

Flea treatment has indeed advanced since '92 - so don't be sucked in to buying the stuff you see in pet stores, because this is the cheap old-fashioned rubbish that doesn't work.

You probably need to treat your house as well. If you keep your dog and your house treated you'll be safe from any fleas that might be on other animals. But please get those poor strays rounded up by a shelter!!

i use a product called Revolution. not only is it a flea and tick medicine, it is also used for heartworm prevention. ask your vet about it. we have used it on our dog for almost 2 years and we have never had fleas/ticks.

Frontline Plus, it kills all stages of fleas & ticks.

While you can get it locally, there are several reputable online sources that can save you $$$.

Advantix (not advantage) is the best for fleas, ticks, and mosquitos.
