I'm talking about acts such as running into a burning building, jumping into a freezing river, getting into a wrecked, burning car to rescue someone.

Without thought, means you don't think about your own safety at all.

What would drive you to do this?

Since I have been a firefighter/rescue/EMT. The first thought must be: could my hasty assistance cause further damage or make the problem worse? You must assess risk/benefit.
Think of it this way: my help is needed and I drive 100mph to get there, and on the way I wreck. Now resources are divided between two problems, and my contribution to problem 1, is gone.
This happened to my uncle: Father and son are at the beach. Son is starting to struggle with waves and undertow. He just bobbing in and out. Father without thinking, jumps in and swims out to get son. He gets to son and they both over taking by the water. Now some one finally notices they are in extreme trouble. A strong swimmer goes out had to make a decision between father and son. He takes son in, now weekend, he returns for the father, and he even starts to have some trouble, both father and rescuer do make it in. But this could have continue to get worse. Just calling out for help, and having other strong swimmers help as soon as they could. But for a weak swimmer to help, would start another porblem, again.
Help when you are capable, get help when you're not.

No. I have a son I need to stay alive for. I am all for helping people but I don't think going hurriedly into something in which I will not survive is the best way to do so.

I have saved people from drowning before but it all depends on the circumstances. I am a really strong swimmer so I usually feel confident in water situations. I don't know about a burning building though.

I've done it in the anxiety of the moment. If you know what must be done and everybody else is standing around, not knowing what to do, impulsiveness takes over and usually you have every intention of rescuing the person WITHOUT succumbing to death yourself! It's an instant reaction.

You think, "That guy is gonna die!" Then you just run and do what needs to be done. I've yelled to others to call 911 as I was going to someone's aid. But the thought never occurred to me that I was putting myself in danger. I just thought, if someone doesn't do something, the person in danger won't make it.

And THAT would be an awful thing to have to live with.

In the heat of the moment, I have put myself in harms way to help others.

To be honest it wasn't with thought, because I didn't have time to reason, only to react.

So it wasn't an act of heroism, just of instinct.

I was driven to do it by my compassion of humanity, others around me, didn't act, I have no idea why, maybe they are smarter than I am. But at the time, I only saw someone in need and hurting, I just jumped right into action, and didn't even consider the consequences until later that evening, when it hit me very hard.

Funny, I was thinking about this the other day while watching the news about the college kids that died in the house fire. One of them survived by jumping out of the window into a waterway below and I wondered if I would be able to do that if my life depended on it (I am deathly afraid of heights!). I know I would be able to help someone else because I don't have it in me to watch someone die if there was something I could do to stop it.

Yes, because if we are not ready to lay down our lives for others,,then we have no right to the sacrifice of Jesus for us. Pray I will be brave if it is required of me...I tend to be a little whiney about running into burning buildings,,,or jumping into freezing rivers,,,,,

I think this is a question you can ask only at that moment. It is easy to think 'of course' but different when facing such thing. And sometimes you can be very surprised.

Most people are going to say yes, but in all reality most people freeze during situations like this.
Thats why in a given emergency you directly point to someone and say "go call 911" because if you say "someone call 911" everyone will just stand there.

I don't know and I don't think others can say yes or no either. I was in Vietnam with a guy named Danny Fernandez who was a skinny kid that wasn't "special" in any way. One day we got pinned down by enemy fire, they threw a grenade and Danny dove on it saving six of us. He died, but if you'd lined the seven of us up before we went out and asked who would be getting the Medal of Honor I would have put Danny sixth and me seventh.

Yes, but more importantly everyday I do something to save a stranger. I write to my president, senators etc..... Asking them to stop the killing in Darfur, Iran,China........
Everyday I pray for peace and guidance. Everyday I pray for women who are alone and pregnant, that there will be someone there to help them.
Why is there no cure for cancer? Hmmmm, maybe they were aborted?
We live in a great country, I pray for all those who defend our freedoms.
Please do something, anything to save a life today!
All God's blessings
