That would be Venice's Marco Polo Airport. Delta Airlines is the only airline that flies direct to that airport from the USA. They have daily flights from Atlanta and New York-JFK.

It is a fighter base, so the ops tempo is pretty high. The base itself sits in the middle of some small villages, so there isn't much in the immediate local area. BUT... Venezia (Venice) is not far away by train, Pordenone is a good size town (which is where the train station is), you're sitting at the base of the Italian Alps, several former Eastern bloc countries are not far away, lots of travel and touristy opportunities, etc. Learn the language and get out and travel, and it will be great! Hubby went TDY often to Aviano, and I was able to join him on one trip. Great time!! Oh, as for the AC, Europe is not air-conditioned. You get used to it!

Venice (Venezia) actually wants no introduction, see getting there with hotelbye . This city has been a fabled destination for centuries. Only the name Venice is sufficient to conjure up a bunch of pictures, even for folks who have not yet collection base in Italy. From gondoliers in striped tops to the Rialto and the Bridge of Sighs, bad balls, fantastic barges, courtesans in gondolas and failing palaces facing streets manufactured from water Venice is a fantastic city. When the sole bridge throughout the Grand Canal, Rialto Bridge marks the spot of the island's first settlement, named Rivus Altus and is now one of the lots of place that Venice has to offer.

Venice is probably closest, but expensive. Milan is further but less expensive - and you can take a train from there to Venice or Aviano. Munich is another possibility, plus a train.
