NO!
yoiu need to go to the vet and do an exstensive test to see how bad they are.
If they are at a low level then you can put the dog on heartworm meds and keep him on it for 3 years and after 3 years he will be heartworm neg.

If it's a higher level the dog will probaby need the more expensive treatment.
The vet may even recommend giving the dog the heartworm meds at this stage if you cannot afford the treatment,.
if the dog lives through the first week it has a good chance of living the next 3 years until the worms are killed off, but theres always a great chance that the dog will die doing this treatment.

Based upon everything I've ever read about heartworms too large a dose of invermectin (meds. in Heartgard for heartworms) can be fatal to a dog. It's not something you should try to treat without consulting a vet and it's not a death sentence if treated correctly. Good luck.

Heartgard kills worms that are up to 45 days old. This means that it will prevent any more from getting into him. Also it will stun the older ones. That means he will not be contagious if a mosquito bites him and also the worms will not grow any larger. Large doses of heartgard can kill the worms but I do not recommend this as the worm sections can cause heart attacks and strokes. Just continue on heartgard like the vet says and he should live a while longer.

no, heartgard is only a preventative. to treat heartworms you need a vet and if the case is severe you might lose the dog, sorry.

No, the dog has to be treated by the vet. Heartgard is for prevention.

No! That could very possibly kill your dog.

Heartworms themselves are fatal, too, and the longer a dog has them (even if eventually cured), the more damage done and the shorter the dog's overall live expectancy... so if your dog has heartworms you need to get him/her treatment immediately!

the heartgard could kill the baby heartworms off so fast that it would make your dog sick and possibly kill it. that is why it is always tested before meds are dispensed.

If you were pregnant, could you take birth control pills and not be?

No.

Take your dog to the vet. Depending on the damage that's been done, this could be as simple as a round of antibiotics or as severe as surgery. The only way of knowing is to have him treated by the vet.

No!

Vet treatment is necessary.

(giving heartgard when the dog is already infected can be lethal.)
