Use a converter. I don't know how you could use it any other way. British plugs are pronged, and the others are not. You couldn't even fit one of yours into the socket without a converter.

Purchase an inverter which reduces the voltage from 240 to 120 volts.

You need to buy a step-down transformer from (240v to 120v). The power rating of the transformer must be the same or greater than the appliance power rating (preferrably greater).

Even the 1500 Watt models, here, are under US$50 (that's pretty cheap).

Depends what the appliance is - but any voltage inverter is more likely to cost more than your appliance. Buy another in UK .

You can buy a converter that is sold in most travel departments. The only problem is that the appliance must not draw too much power and must work on 50 cycles.

IF it will work at 50Hz (which some electrical items don't) you need to convert the voltage to 120VAC. A direct adapter will blow it up

I think that for things with small power demand(like electic shavers)adaptors are easily available as travel accessories.

You need a 240V to 120V stepdown transformer and an adapter to place in your 240V socket to get the US type outlet.
However, if the item you want to run has a motor, it will run slower in the UK than in the US due to the 50Hz/s frequency in the UK. (The US is 60Hz/s).
