The Golden Compass deals with the evils that the church does in the name of dogma and doctrine. We will have to see how well that comes across in the movie.
The real crunch comes in the final book, The Amber Spyglass.
Hopefully Golden Compas will be enough of a success to push forward the other two books, and we will have something instead of the schmaltz of Narnia.
I really do not know why the Catholic church would object so much to this. After all, there is nothing in the books that is significantly different from things that the Catholic church has actually done in the past. Actually, that is probably a very good explanation of why the object to it! LOL

Viewers and ratings. Honestly, who would watch a show about a good, wholesome Christian family? No offense, but that's not what sells, and selling is what Hollwood is there for, along with the music industry. The whole point is that sex sells. people do not want to see a show about a nice religious family (like the Waltons or Little House on The Prairie) nowadays.

Most movies these days are.
That's one reason why I don't watch very many of them nowdays..... I don't get on a soapbox about it or anything - I just don't watch them. I'm actually a fan of older movies. By "older" I mean made ones made back in the 1930's, 40's, and 50's. Movies had a little more regard and respect for religion in general back then.
edit:
Went back and read the online stories about the movie "The Golden Compass". I am totally unimpressed. Another movie to avoid watching. That's all.

No one gets upset over militantly religious movies... it's a shame that we even have to ask this question, eh? I'm really glad Fireball is going to do the logical thing. I'd have pegged her for a stand outside the front protesting kind of person.

Look at the popularity of the Harry Potter series. The christians hated those too...
I think New Line is just attempting to cash in on the popularity of a Potter-esque kind of book.
This has me curious. I might give those books a gander.

If a book, film, or presentation is blatantly anti-Christian, then I can exercise my right not to see it. As a Christian, I don't see the need to make a big fuss about other people's anti-Christian opinions. If I don't like something, it's easy enough to walk away from it. Nobody's forcing me to watch potentially offensive films, TV shows, or anything else.

This movie is particularly offensive to Catholics. It has been watered down, but they believe it will encourage children to read the originals. The author uses as an evil force a religion that has strayed from its original principals and become corrupted.

Aren't we the ones pointing fingers at places like Iran and feeling all superior because in their country if ANY movie, song or book even HINTS at Islam in a negative light they take out a hit on the person who made it, their family, their livlihood etc.
Little do we realize how CLOSE we are becoming to them.

I dont think it even looks that good, like Narnia was disapointing because of crappy special effects, this looks the same and the fact that he is an outspoken athiest who intertwines that and Christian theology....Im in no rush to see this one. I saw these books in Borders a few weeks ago and I did find it strange that they are called HIS DARK MATERIALS, kids books....right. Whatever
And Barbara, you didnt hear about the whole anti-semetic battle over passion of the Christ?

God does not care. For the message is the same for us as for you. So if you agree about a anti-christian movie. It would not be the first time and believe you me it will not be the last.
