Brimstone is sulfur, often found at volcanic vents. It's terrifying if you visualize a volcanic Hell. Mostly, it comes from a very smelly place.

brimstone is sulfer and when it burns it smells VERY bad. Worse than the most rotten of rotten eggs. And it is HOT when afire.
Think rotten eggs mixed in with spoiled milk on a blow torch.

Burning sulfur and it stinks. It was used in ancient Roman garbage dumps to burn up the bodies of the dead animals and dead criminals. It also helped to kill the rats that fed on the dead carcases. One famous garbage dump was outside of Jerusalem and was called the valley of Henna or Gehenna, and that is where Christians first got their idea for a burning hell, from the local dump.
