It's almost unfathomable to me that in these times it's an issue. It looks like each individual state will have to fight this out in court since we don't have a president on the side of reason.

What these Creationists don't realize, of course, is they are shooting themselves in the foot every time they attempt to rationalize their beliefs, or attempt to discredit actual science.
They prove with their every word that they are completely unqualified to debate the subject, as they have no idea what modern science actually claims.
They "refute" supposed scientific claims that don't exist... anywhere. They SAY that modern science professes something, and then they explain why that's wrong.
What they don't seem to understand, when they say these ignorant things, is that the ideas they are attempting to refute are often FAR closer to their own beliefs, than modern scientific thought. (IE - Scientists believe life just popped out of nowhere. But if that was the case, this jar of peanut butter would have life in it, wouldn't it?)
It's amazing how powerful the cult of personality can be. And that is all that these people have left to rely on. It will probably be funny to look back on in a couple decades. But right now, it's a legitimate thing to be concerned about. I just hope these loonies don't decide to start blowing up museums or something.

Math and science have no inherent connection, so I cannot say about math. Math was purposefully left out of the development of modern science for at least the first 60 years. (1) But I do agree with the spirit of this question; religious lobbying is one of the major hindrances to scientific (and thus social) progress.

Evolution is just a theory, same as gravity: all observation points to it being correct. ID claims since we don't understand it, it must be supernatural. If that is the case, Computers are divine.
What I am wondering is why aren't there more talking serpents in the world, there's one in the bible on page 2!

My family in UK also can't help commenting on some of the more insane things that are allowed over here. It can be very embarrassing at times. But really only recently, when I first moved to the USA in the '90's it was not as bad.

To use the Bush quote, I'd like to point out that a jury trial is rigged when when half the jury already have their minds made up without looking at the evidence, know what I mean?

Thank God (in slang terms) that Americans are violent war mongers otherwise all the wonderful achievements they've made with the likes of NASA would never have been made!

imo the problem is people spend more time bickering about such an unimportant issue like that and not enough time focusing on science .. science needs to redo its image to the american public so its an "in" thing and not a nerd in a white labcoat also ...
