I feel the same way about food at the dollar store or at Odd Lots.
Here are a few things I've noticed about the food:
1. The food is near it's expiration date.
2. The food was purchased from a closing of another supermarket.
3. The food is made in another country - Mexico seems to be popular.
4. I have no proof of this, but I'm thinking the food is salvaged from somewhere. A flooded supermarket from another part of the country? I'm just guessing, but some of the packages look like they've been through a tornado or two.

I know what you mean. No, there's nothing wrong with the food. I'm sure in general it is near the end of it's shelf life and may have lost some flavor because that's how the $ store gets their food. Also mostly it's not name brands in case you hadn't noticed. The off brands are less expensive because they are ofter 2nd runs from brand name products. I personally don't think they are quite as good but that's a matter of personal preference. The is nothing bad or microbiologically unsound about $ store foods.

Me too! They usually recieve the products that the other stores wont buy, like you said, something is flawed, but it's very suttle. OR they are almost about to expire! and the crappy thing is alot of times they still charge the same or even MORE than at other grocery store!
But Aldy's is place where their food is cheaper and it's still good, maybe you should check it out.

I have found several products that are overpriced, I think a lot of shoppers just figure that if it's at the dollar store it must be a good buy, but---- how about those 79 cent items that are selling for a dollar, or the canned veggies for instance that I can pick up for 49 cents at the grocery store that are "on sale" for a dollar!

My friend works for a food distrubution company that sells to the dollar stores and there is noting wrong with the food, it's just closer to its expiration date than that in a major food chain.
He says don't buy fresh food, meat, etc, just canned, bottled or pre-packaged items that do not require refridgeration (sp?).

i shop there every week, these items that the dollar store sells are sometimes off brand and they buy in bulk, the food is never stale and i find them perfectly fine and a good price..most of the other items are great and fit alot of budget minded comsumers.

Check the expiration date, make sure there are no dents in the cans, and check the coloration of the jar items.

No, sometimes its just an overflow of products, and they purchase them at a reduced rate. I buy several food items from there.

No, but use them immediately. They usually have an expiration date that is fast approaching.
