It is a theory that describes all aspects of communications: sources, modulators, transmitters, comm. channels, receivers, demodulators, and reproduction devices, and noise sources.

The theory must show that the message at the source will be faithfully reproduced for the recipient, through all of the transformations that take place and in spite of noise introduced at various points along the process. It must also show how the source signal will be degraded and quantify the level of degredation at the recipient end.
