I'd say it already started...the pre-lude was 9/11 attack on America. Act I was the US invasion of Iraq.
Act II will be a middle east conflagaration around Israel,Palestine,Syria,Iran axis.
Act III - while US is busy defending Israel, North Korea will take the opportunity to invade the South and China will takeover Taiwan...leading to nuclear showdown similar to the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Act IV - will be the breakdown of the "system", loss in confidence of US economy, long gas lines at the pump, Constitutional rights abolished
Act V - the end...who knows how it will end, but Einstein said World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.... for the previous war will have knocked us back to the Stone Age.....

I believe World War III will commence in a dispute over Israel. Aside from a Biblical prediction, consider how many nations want that little piece of land about the size of New Jersey to stop existing. Iran attempting to make good Ahmanutjob's proclamation that Israel should be wiped off the map will be the triggering mechanism.

AT a reasoned guess, the world will sit by and do nothing while Iran develops a nuclear technology. The United States ultimately will be forced into doing nothing by the liberal element within this country. Iran will arrange for Al Queda to get some plutonium from this reactor technology. The powdered plutonium will be used in a dirty bomb in London, New York, or DC-will cause thousands and thousands of deaths and more in lingering cancers. Since the distribution of trace elements within the plutonium will identify it is coming from the Iranian reactor--Brtian or the US-whoever is attacked will respond with their own WMD's. This most likely will draw the Soviets in. God only hopes that global war can remain conventional at this point.

When China attacks Taiwan and the U.S. sends in 7th Fleet in response. The Chinese have threatened to use nuclear weapons in both situations. I write military fiction books and that's how the events in my first book started the war.

The scary thing is that what starts WW3 will probably be some really stupid misunderstanding, the tension levels are so high in south and southwest Asia that that would be enough.

There are two options I see:
1) Current hot threat situation:
~~ Iran lobs a nuke at Israel
~~ Israel is so close that detection and detonation time difference does not allow for reasonable determination of source. They launch at every country on their probability list as well as those nations allies. This means every middle eastern nation, russia, germany, france, china, and pakistan (probably more)
~~ Those nations in turn launch their nukes. Welcome to a holocaust
2) the slow burning global threat option:
~~ China invades Taiwan
~~ America responds by attempting to counter invade and free the island. Japan and India become involved. Russia helps China. Fortunately, this one stands a chance of NOT going nuclear OR...
~~ America doesn't have the popular support to respond and doesn't send in the fleet. The ability of America to protect the interests of its allies is called into question on a global scale and blossoms, Israel is invaded (again), as well as several others of our smaller allies. China becomes the dominant power in the eastern hemisphere, breaking american support. Japan begins to frantically re-arm in the increased threat of chinese invasion. Russia begins eyeing power in Europe to match china's growth and begins to challenge US authority by threatening eastern block countries.

Very possible that an attack on Iran's nuclear power plant, or facilities by either Israel (the most likely) or the United States will be the start of that war.
It seems like Israel thinks they can attack and bomb any country at will, and get away with it, and there is no reason why the Arab nations should not band together and stop Israel's aggression.

Weak leadership, like Hillary being elected, combined with a strike simultaneously on American interests and on Israel.
