I left my job in Sept. 06 and would like to put something on my resume that would be appropriate so I don't have a big gap. Maybe something like Individual consultant, I haven't been employed but have done some computer work for a few people.

First, don't lie. If you have a gap in your employment history, just be prepared to answer for that gap during your interview, intelligently. No one really expects anyone in this day and age NOT to have some gaps in your work history. You could have had a baby or you where dealing with other family issues. What makes it really bad is lying about your time with nonsense buzz words (individual consultant?!?) and then when confronted about it, not being able to INTELLIGENTLY tell the interviewer what really went on. Practice with someone for any interview you have to go on and research that company. A smart, informed applicant with gaps in their resume has more of a chance than a shifty, nervous liar.

If you are going to leave a gap, just be prepared to explain during an interview... or you can list your interests/skills such as your computer work or any professional organizations you are in.

Use a bullet format instead of chronological. It is rare but there are some people who don't live pay check to pay check. If they ask just turn it into some thing positive and say you were living off your assets.
