Also, I live in Canada... is there anything i can do to help lower my fine?

Since you live in Canada, you are still responsible to pay the fine. If you don't a warrant will be issued for your arrest for failure to appear at court, and though it's unlikely the US would proceed with extradition from Canada, it's entirely likely that if you try to enter the US again you'll get arrested at the border.

That being said, I'd suggest you hire a traffic lawyer in the area where you got the ticket. They are knowledgeable on how to reduce your fine, or even have the ticket dismissed. The lawyer fee will likely be less than the ticket. Since you're not licensed in NY, you can't do "alternatives" like driver education.

So your options are fairly limited. I say go with a lawyer.

20 over the limit is a lot of money. do not risk it
