I bet his car is first class after the repairs summed more than the car was worth. Three words: Built in Mexico.

95 Golf GL 2.0L FI engine w/ manual 5 speed transmission. Stock drivetrain.
1) ring gear freed itself from the transmission. Required a new transmission housing. I purchased a used one from car-part.com for 450 and had a shop swap it with the bad one. Total cost 750.
2) water pump died. R&R from another shop. Also did various belts at the same time to avoid having to do them later.

That's about it. Overall not a bad car other than the weird tranny issue which I found out later is not that uncommon but not that common either.

HTH.
