The Holy Spirit is the indwelling 3rd person of the trinity who comes to live and dwell within us as believers at the point of salvation.
The angel of the Lord is simply His messanger

I know that there are many very learned and studied pastors and teachers that disagree about this.
I have studied it also, and cannot accept mans position on this at all.
If God said it was an angel, then its an angel, NOT preincarnate Christ. IT is not the Holy spirit either. IT is simply what GOD wanted written.
Sometimes, I think the more we study stuff the more we tend to want to make it more complicated than it really is.
So, no they are not the same. Angels have different levels of abilities and jobs as we see in the bible. THis one just happens to be called "the" angel of the Lord as opposed to another being called an arc angel, such as michael or Gabriel.
The Holy spirit is always refered to as the Holy Spirit or the comforter, never as an angel of any sort.

The holy Spirit and the Angel of the Lord are not the same thing.

The 'angel of the Lord' is God's messenger. The Holy Spirit is the Lord's Spirit.

First of all, the Holy Spirit is the third member of the GodHead
and equal in power, nature and glory with the Father and the
WORD( the Lord Jesus). The Angel of the Lord's presence is
another title of the Lord Christ-Jesus prior to His incarnation
as the only-begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

Big difference.
The angel of the Lord is an angel, a created being and ministering spirit sent as an ambassador of God.
But the Holy Spirit is God! His very presence!
