Yes cats do get leukaemia. There is a a virus they can contract that causes leukaemia, it's not uncommon and it is deadly, which is why there is a vaccine available for it.

Now, let me get this straight. Your vet, a professional who went to med school for 5 years was foxed by your cat's condition - but you think a bunch of unqualified strangers on the internet would know? You deserve all the stupid answers you got.

It is not normal for any breed to lose fur. If you haven't found any answers with your current vet, try another. Did they consider hormonal problems?

Don't turn to Yahoo for medical advice, and don't be smarmy about things you don't understand.

Chalice

EDIT: OK on reading your answers, you've only got ONE stupid answer so far, and it was well-meaning I think! Your lucky that's all you got, I can't believe how rude you've been about people who've taken the time to try to help. It's not their fault they don't know what's wrong with your cat, they're not vets.

Are you sure he is actually losing his hair, or has it always just been thin there? I have a black cat and I noticed that her hair appeared thinner in the area by her ears down to her eyes. I thought it was weird at first but then I noticed on other cats too, particularly ones with dark fur (probably because, like you said, the skin is light compared to the hair). My vet has never said anything negative about it and my cat is in perfect health. I think that some cats just have it.

Could be a food allergy. I would take a trip to the vet to see what is up.

Even with a food you have been feeding for years can cause an allergy since formulas change from time to time.

"Demodectic Mange: Thinning and loss of hair around the eyes and eyelids giving moth-eaten appearance. Rare in cats."

I found this the other day on www.nzymes.com when I was looking up cat hair loss.

I think this is really serious and you should bring your kitty to the vet right away.

Get well soon kitty.

You must go to the vet immediately. This cat has leukemia and may have to be put to sleep to save it from suffering.

My calico had same symptoms.
