Maria e Nora sono due ragazze italiane
c' è un bello specchio nel palazzo
a)ecco due nuovi grattacieli or b)ecco due grattacieli nuovi

1st case: shows a normal position for a adjective that shows a quality(qualificativo) but it´s also showing one of the important cases when it´s a must going after it.
(normal cases ex:simpatica, allegra,felice (funny, glad, happy,) rotta (broken) salato (salted) una ragazza simpatica,un amico allegro,un gatto felice,una sedia rotta,una pasta salata,)

infact it´s a must placing the adjectives after the name if they indicate:
a) nationality or region,town where she/he/they come from
(italian,american,french,etc ragazze italiane,persone milanesi)
b)a form,shape or material (squared,rounded,golden,etc..ex.una moneta rotonda)
c)color
(white,black,red,etc... ex un gatto bianco)
d)when the adjective is composed (from 2 different adjectives together)
(anti-rust,ex un liquido antiruggine)
e)if the adjective is "altered"(small=piccolo but if it´s altered it would be piccolino )
(ex.un naso piccolino)
f)if the adjective has a "relationship" with the name(it comes from a name,like month=monthly,
(a monthly reunion=una riunione mensile)

2nd and 3rd(a) case follow the procedure for an adjective that shows a quality(qualificativo)when you want to put the attention on the fact that you want to create a vivid and complete image or an idea of the thing you´re talking about.you´re not qualifying the name as your first purpose but you are creating an image for the person you´re talking to.

3rd(b) case
sometimes the adjectives can go either before or after the name changing its meaning:
ex:

ho comprato una macchina nuova=i bought a new car
ho comprato una nuova macchina=i bought a new car

1)case:you want to show us that the car you bought is new(so its quality)
2)case:you want to show us that you bought another car(either you substitute the old one or you got one more car,but it doesn´t necessarily means that the car is new,it could be a used car)

questa é una mia vecchia scarpa=this is an old shoe of mine
questa é una mia scarpa vecchia=this is my old shoe

1st case=he has been owning this shoe for a very long time(but it could still be in perfect conditions)
2nd case=the shoe,he has, is old (it´s ruined,not wearable(?)any longer)

i hope it´s a bit clearer,and i hope that i didn´t forget anything.....i tried my best..i´m from Italy and i teach italian in a Swedish high school...i hope you can understand a bit better now......

i didn´t ,however,understand what your teacher meant by saying grande e buon are only singular..???
i mean of course if you say grande that´s singular for both male and female name but the plural is grandi
and buon can only be used for singular male words...but then?

(italiano) Maria e Nora sono due ragazze ITALIANI.

(bello) C'e un BELLO specchio nel palazzo.

(nuovo) Ecco due NUOVI grattacieli.

Plural in italian ends by "i" and normally the adjective comes before the name.

Ginam has given you the right answers. Normally, Italian adjectives come AFTER the noun; but some common ones come before the noun, like bello, nuovo.

Nuovo = masc. singular
Nuovi = masc. plural
Nuova = fem. sing.
Nuove = fem. plu.

So, un nuovo amico - a new friend (masc.)
Due nuovi amichi - two new friends
Una nuova macchina - a new car
Due nuove macchine - 2 new cars.

Hope it helps. ☺
