My nephew found a kitten abandoned and it is now about 8 wks old. They were unable to keep the kitten so now I have it... of course, lol. My question is that the cat doesn't seem to be able to see me clearly from about 6ft+ away. It can clearly see movement, but acts leary until you are close enough or call it. I'm wondering if this is the reason it was separated from its mother... Any opinions? Thanks!

This cat is quite young. I have plenty of experience with kittens and have never had one with vision problems. I don't think mother cats usually abandon nursing kittens unless something is wrong with them. What I meant is maybe they got too far ahead and this kitten, assuming it has poor vision, was unable to see them to keep up...

if it is that old, YES, it should be able to see clearly. Are the eyes dilated and the cat follow the walls? If so, those are bad signs. Also, if it has high blood pressure (most likely, this is NOT the cause), then it needs meds. Do the eyes react to light and look clear? Please take kitty to the vet.

One more quick thing- a good source of taurine is that Whiskas Cat milk- but I'd still take it to the vet.

He should be able to see pretty clearly at this point. It could still be developing its sight though at 9 weeks kittens are usually ready to go to their new homes. He may just be acting goofy because he's a kitten and he's playing or he's just scared bc everything towers above him.

If you're really worried about it take him to a vet and they can check him out and make sure his eyesight is ok...

First moms leave them. Its not a human baby its meant to survive without mom. Animals are not like human parents they don't have an "urge" to be mommies.

Second it may be younger than you think.

Third is just a guess but if it was a stray on its own it may not be getting the taurine it needs in cat food

He should be able to see. You must take him to the vet fo his shots and de-worming anyway, so ask the vet to check his eyes too. But even if his eye sight is not so good, cats learn to find their way around the house even if they don't see. Just don't let it outdoors, and make sure his eyes are not infected.
