He's a 2 y.o. male rescue (pug) who was treated for fleas whenI first got him a month ago. He was rubbing his bum on the floor all the time, so I took him to the vet, who expressed his anal sacs. He has no fur loss or red, patchy areas areas, but he still seems miserable with his scratching. He sometimes also licks his paws and rubs his eyes with it, which makes me wonder if it's allergies. Any ideas of what this could be?

Thanks. These are all great suggestions! He was dewormed when he was rescued from the shelter about 2 mos. ago--could he have gotten more?

My Chocolate Lab suffers from allergies. She has to regularly have her anal glands expressed (she is going to have it done again on Monday) and she nibbles at her paws and also gets a lot of ear infections. It sounds like your dog may have a skin allergy too. The vet will be able to diagnose it with a blood test. My dog has regular immuno therapy injections and it is helping her. I think you should see your vet because your dog will be very miserable, mine was. Also if his anal glands are full they can also get infected and you will need to give him antibiotics. Good luck.
I worm mine every 3 months so he should be OK, but it wouldn't hurt to worm him again to make sure.

Dogs need to be treated monthly for fleas, or two monthly if using Frontline. Sounds like he's due another dose! They also need to be wormed at least every three months.
Do you know what treatment the rescue centre used? There are many different kinds. Be careful when you select yours - don't use anything from a pet store because they stuff sold in stores doesn't work, and is often not safe.
Pop in to a vets for some flea treatment. You will probably have to spray your house as well, since this is where most of the fleas are living. Again, get something from a vets, not a pet store.
There are many things that may cause itching, allergies is one of them. Find out if it IS an allergy before you start playing around with the dog's diet - it might not be food that he's allergic to. You need to take the dog to a vet to actually find out what's causing the trouble because no one on here can tell you.

In most small dog breeds, the anal glands get impacted because (for some reason) they don't empty naturally into the rectum. You need to either learn how to empty the anal glands yourself, or take your dog to a Vet (who will show you how to do this) at least the first time.
It's a very smelly process, so best done whilst either bathing the dog or done outside.
Remember to face the dog's bum away from you (or anyone/thing else) when performing the service.
Your dog will be MUCH more comfortable after this is done.
The bum shuffling is because the dog is trying to get the glands to empty using pressure but failing.

he likely has infected anal glands which can take a while to resolve, requires antibiotics and sometimes surgery to remove the glands. Try taking him back to the vet and a course of antibiotics, feed him a quality all naturally preserved food like Royal Canin, Inova or Eukanuba... pugs often need their faces washed daily under their eyes and in the wrinkles on their faces... special face wash is available if you look on a pet suppy site on the internet... just type in Pet Supplies and your area in google. Also, try the once a month topical Revolution from your vet. He may have internal parasites which can cause skin and rectal itching... Revolution will take care of that.

Dogs often lick obsessively at their paws and "wipe" their eyes in reactions to allergies. If you're in the Midwest somewhere, it's ragweed season and many dogs (As well as people) have a reaction to it.
Talk to your vet about allergies and have him tested.

It could be allergies or worms. Check again with the vet. Don't put Frontline on until you know.
good luck!

Check between his toes, see if they are red. This is commonly caused by an allergy to something in their food, usually corn or wheat. Ask your vet about that possibility.
