We are in a long-distance relationship so a dog would be company when he's away. I'm worried because in my past relationships I've always over-babied my men and they become possessive of my time and attention.

He should grow up. If you want a dog, it's your right to have one. Dogs provide terrific company, they're relentlessly cheerful, and help you get out and about because they need fresh air and exercise. A dog doesn't replace human conversation and companionship, but they're lovely to have around. It's not as if your boyfriend can tell you what to do.

Good reason to worry as we tend to repeat the same pattern over and over again. Since this is not your husband, and you are not dependent upon him for your support, Get a dog if you want a dog. It is never good when someone in the relationship thinks it is ok to dictate what the other person can or can't do.When we narrow our field of possibilities to suit someone elses desires it is a recipe for unhappiness and discontent. Get the dog, they are usually great judges of character and he may be around longer than the boyfriend.

Then LET your boyfriend be your dog for a while, and treat him accordingly.

You'll have to get him micro-chipped and a collar to wear around his neck with an identification tag listing his latest rabies vaccination, as well as a crate to sleep in during the night with his favorite chew toys. You'll also need to get him neutered to prevent the births of unwanted litters by stray bitches he might meet around town.

Of course, you'll also want to train him to come when you call, sit and lie down when told, and not to jump up and hump your leg or lick your face in public. PetSmart has some great classes, and they guarantee results.

Get a leash and take him out on walks so he can do his business outside, and give him a treat when he fetches the newspaper or your slippers.

Three days of this behavior and your boyfriend will buy you a dog himself.

Get a dog if that's what you want. Who is your boyfriend to say what you can and can't do? If you live alone and you want a dog to keep you company and make you feel safe then do it . I have 3 and when my husband leaves to go out of town I feel safe and I have company evn thou they can't talk I still know I am not alone .. Look at the animal shelter close to you before looking at a pet shop or in the newspaper. They normaly put a micro chip in the dog for you and the dog will be fixed and have it's 1st set of shot. You pay for it all but it's not alot. I paid $200 for my dog and her shot's ,get her fixed and micro chipped.

Your BF has issues. You can not fix him, you cannot change him, let him go. A fellow who is jealous of a girl's pet dog is pathetic. You do not owe him any excuses for your wanting a pet.

Get a dog only if you can provide 15 or more years of attention, love, veterinary expenses, food every day, fresh water, training, and companionship for him or her. And, when he or she is a puppy, patience through the teething process and housetraining.

If your boyfriend is worried about being replaced by a dog it's time to seek that puppy of your dreams.
While it's always nice to have someone to walk on for those bad days.
It's not good to have when you want a real man to hold you.
You should be seeking someone who is more worried about you and him instead of the pets you might acquire during the relationship.

Well, I would feel more sorry for Fido because he's the one who will be true to you and your bf and no pun intended, will end up in the dog house!!! (that is if you stick with possessive idiots. Find someone who loves dogs and cats too!!! And you'll probably find a soul mate!!

Sounds like your boyfriend is a loser! I've never heard anyone sounds more like a loser than he sounds! And you are in a long distance relationship with this fool? Save yourself now and dump him, name your new puppy after him, and then call him to tell him about it so he realizes how much of a loser he is!
