I can't stand my boyfriend's cat, and I've tried giving her many chances. I've bought her toys and have tried playing with her. She growls and hisses at me, scratches my dog and me, claws curtains, and sucks up to my boyfriend. She's peed on me, too. My boyfriend doesn't seem to think she's bad because she still likes him. She does this LOUD meow/howl thing when she wants attention, and he just rewards it. This cat is such a brat, and she acts all innocent and loving to my boyfriend. It's driving me nuts! What can I do?

I lose? It's not a game. I'll outlive the damn cat at any rate. I've been a shelter volunteer too and have never met a cat as bipolar as this one.

Leave the cat alone for now. When it is ready to make peace, it will come around. Have little fishy treats ready for this occasion. Be patient.

Cats do not like change at all.

She is probably terrified of you adn your dog. I would stop bringing your dog over to your boyfriend's place or keep him from bringing his cat over. Animals need slower introductions than you are providing. I would allow her to get to know you first and not the dog. The cat only needs to meet your dog when there is an official moving in together is happening and then it must be done in the proper manner.

Some ways I got my cat to bond with my boyfriend was to have him scoop the litter boxes and do the feedings (my cats are on meals). They love him now and no longer hiss/growl/scratch him. It builds trust.

Another thing to add to his home is a Feliway diffuser which will reduce stress levels. Just keep it away from the litter boxes. You can get it cheapest at www.petsmart.com, but not the actual store. There is actually a heavy markup in the store.

The cat came first, so you're kinda the odd one out. Regardless, the cat scratching you and your dog isn't good. I'd think your boyfriend would be concerned for you and you dog and would realise that by teaching his cat to behave and not be aggressive isn't the same as casting her out into the cold street. It always upsets me when people allow/encourage their pets to be aggressive/violent... it makes others think all cats, dogs, whatever are aggressive and thus causes prejudice against those who ARE well behaved.

My ex-girlfriend's cat (who I actually found) was a nut and would attack both of us and my dog. Of course, he was young and slightly feral, so we put up with it, but I wasn't happy about him attacking my dog (who grew up with cats and other small animals, adores them, and is old... so it wasn't fair to him). So, we started playing "get the kitty", where everytime the cat was about to pounce him, I'd have my dog charge the little devil and pin him. And sure enough, the cat stopped attacking him (at least as much... it became quite rare, anyway). Of course, this only worked coz I knew my dog would never actually hurt him (he'd never bite him or anything), only scare him. But... if your dog is the same, I swear it works wonders.

Otherwise... the cat's probably just jealous of you. You're invading her space and her man. So she'll probably keep scratching and peeing on you until you're gone forever. But yeah... if you're jealous of the cat, that's stupid. They were together before you came into the picture, so deal with it. But it sounds less like jealousy and more like you don't want you and your dog to be attacked, so... Good luck!

hmm, I'm not a fan of cats either. I would tell my boyfriend when I come over if he could please keep the cat in seperate room, cuz the cat scratches and hisses at you..He should respect that..if so, say you're not coming over anymore if he doesn't..

Leave. The cat had him first. You lose.

EDIT: I have 15 year old parrots. One tolerates my boyfriend. The other hates him even after 9 years. What does he do? Ignore it. Keep the cat away from you then. Or leave, like I said. You're not going to make him give it up, are you? What do you think its odds in a shelter will be?

Dump both of them. Not only are you putting up with this grief, so is your dog.

The only thing you can do is get over your jealousy of his cat or risk losing your boyfriend.

My ex husband was constantly mean to my cats and I found his jealousy to be nothing short of juvenile. When I thought about who brought more joy into my life, it was an easy decision. I dumped my husband, packed up my cats, and left.

The cat is probably reacting to you bringing a dog into HER house. You smell like the dog, so you're going to get peed on.

I have to say, if my animals reacted that way towards someone... the person would have to go.
