No, it's not really worth visiting. Most of the people who go there are just enroute to the LACMA. If your into that type of museum you should visit the Museum of Natural History over by USC.
However, if you're into the whole paleontologist research...then yess you should head over.

The La Brea Tar Pits can be disappointing, but they're doing a dig you can watch in the back of the museum. The Museum is worth the trip alone. We're talking the Los Angeles County Art Museum. 5905 Wilshire Blvd. 90036. Google it to find out what exhibits are showing when you'll be there and enjoy.

It is worth a trip if you are interested in fossils. It is not an all day trip, so you may want to swing past the museum of natural history before or after for a bit more to see.

If you are into it, yes. But if you are just visiting LA and want to see interesting landmarks, then no....
That area where the tarpits is located is called the Miracle Mile and there are also other interesting landmarks, such as the Peterson Museum and the LACMA.

Yes, definitely if you are into fossils, they have a mammoth collection or indian history, the Tongva Indians used the tar to coat and waterproof their boats so they could get out to the channel islands...

Fossils are very interesting. The bones are totally intact and considered bones more than fossils. I find it ver interesting.

It's ok. If you get bored, there is the farmers market near by. Now that's fun.
