B&H is one safe place to buy online and save some money. Usually the cost of shipping is about what you'd pay for sales tax, though with the price of gasoline higher, shipping is way up. I say if you need the advice and handholding that a good camera store can provide, then it is only fair to buy locally- you don't have to wait for the item to ship and if you have a problem with it, they will help you to get it fixed under warranty. I've bought online only to have a defective camera right out of the box and I had to deal with the hassle of sending it back myself.

There are numerous reputable places on-line to buy from. Most are extensions of real brick & mortar stores. Here are some: keh.com, bhphotovideo.com, henrys.com, cametacamera.com. There are more. Check any photography magazine, like Shutterbug, and you'll see reputable advertisers.

Now as to whether you should buy from a local professional camera store, IMO its the best choice for someone buying their first high-end digicam or DSLR. Why? Because you're face to face with the salesperson. You have someone who can explain the features and benefits of different camera models, answer questions, solve problems and offer informed advice. Some camera stores even offer an hour or two of instruction with your purchase. Rather difficult to get service like that on-line.

Some of the best places to buy:
1) http://www.buydig.com
2) http://www.bhphotovideo.com
3) http://www.adorama.com
4) http://www.samys.com

Used:
http://www.keh.com

If you need to handle a camera physically and want to develop a personal relationship, get personalized customer service, and immediate assistance when things go wrong, then you should patronize your local stores and get to know the people who work there.

If price is your major concern, online shopping is good, although prices on high-end items are often very similar between an online shop and your local store. One difference might be local/state taxes.

Generally, if you need something immediately, your local stores are a better choice. If you need something you can 't find at your local store, then the online store is a better choice. If it's about avoiding state taxes, go online. If it's about personalized service, shop local.

Hope that helps.
