You are selfish...not a bad person.

You make waitresses AND cooks jobs harder than they have to be.

I am sure tipping is different in Scotland. Maybe the waitresses make more money. But if you lived here in the states you would be considered a tightwad, cheap as* and many other things. I would be embarrased to go to dinner with you and have to make up for your cheap ways!

Start tipping!!!

Good on you! I really hate it when our culture pressures us to be "generous" to people who are already being paying to perform a service. If the people who are performing the service are not being paid enough by their employers, then they should demand more. If the cost of the service went up universally because the laborers were getting paid an appropriate amount, then everyone would get used to that and move on with their lives (especially if they weren't expected to tip anymore!).

I really hate the whole "tipping" thing because it reminds me too much of the offering plate. Giving a gift to someone should be from the heart and spontaneous, not expected or brought on by peer-pressure.

No-one forces you to tip, however, it's generally considered the right thing to do, especially since most people have jobs where tips are the primary source of their incomes (like waiters). There's supposed to be a set percentage amount of a bill you're encouraged to tip (15%, apparently), but tip however much you feel the person who served you deserves.

As for people that set out jars for tips, that's purely optional, as well. Again, no-one's forcing you to tip them, but I usually throw in coins I get from breaking dollars and such. The ones who set out jars are usually the ones who get paid in full, as opposed to waiters.

Yeah, you're tight. Livable wages would be grand to have for all, but since most countries in the world aren't at that level yet wait staff rely on that as part of their wages. I always tip at about 20% of the tab no matter the service. I figure I wouldn't do the job so I should pay them for the service I'm not doing for myself.

A tip is voluntary, in the US waitresses pay tax as though they were receiving 15% gratuity for every customer. So in the states you'd be docking the servers wages in essence. You'd probably have a nickname like "Mac Miser".

(contrary to minimum wage laws, it isn't uncommon for servers to be paid $2 -$4 per hour -- a perk for the restaurant lobby)

This depends on what part of the world you live in. Some places, tipping is not necessary or you tip whatever you like. In America you are considered a tight-wad, cheap-skate or just plain rude, if you do not tip.

I am not familiar with customs there but if you were in the U.S. I would not want to eat at the same table with you. We take care of our bartenders and waitresses always! They can be very ugly if you don't...and I am not sure that tight is really the right word...rude maybe...they are providing a service and if its good you should help them out. They are living off of tips ya know?

Tight and right, in my book. I firmly believe Tipping is a place in China. People who work in the food industry need to be paid a liveable wage, just like the rest of us. When we then go out to eat we expect to pay appropriately. No tipping about it.

No, it does not make you "tight".

You are not in the USA, you are in Scotland.

Different countries, different cultures.

It makes you a bit tight but probably also leads to your food containing an inordinate amount of waiter/waitress saliva.
