there's a big tom cat that looks after my cat who's a spayed female. she kinda gets picked on by all the other cats because she's the newest to the territory, and this tom cat defends her, he's been in 3 fights so far for her (awww). anyway, as reward for his heroic antics, i've kind of adopted him so i see him every night for feeding except for his tomming days. after his most recent tomming session he's come back very grouchy, he won't come near me, flinches when i go toward him and just generally seems like he was the first time i caught him pinching her food. very cautious and seems somewhat scared of me. i never ever so much as acted suprised to see him even from day one, so why all of a sudden is he acting like i'm a complete stranger? i can't see any injuries on him, so anyone have any ideas?

He has probably had someone else get a hold on him and been mean to him. Talk soothingly to him and don't push him. Feed him and talk to him, tell him you aren't going to hurt him and then walk away from the food. Keep talking to him, tell him it's okay to come and eat. Then, go inside. Leave him to eat. (Use your hands to put the food down, your scent will be on the food and he will come around again.) Just keep talking nicely and let him slowly warm back up to you. Tom cats are funny this way. If he has been pranked by someone else, he will realize you are safe eventurally.

You may not see an injury but I wouldn't be surprised if he has one. My friend has been feeding a neighborhood cat for quite some time - the friendliest cat around. He started acting odd and didn't want to be handled. It turned out he had an infected abscess from a bite. I'd get him checked by a vet.

Perhaps he was hurt by a person when he was out timing. It is entirely possible that someone hit/kicked/threw something at him and he is now being very cautious toward you as a result. He'll probably go back to his old habits in a while. Just give him some time.

He could be in pain from something--a stressed muscle, broken tooth, cracked rib, hard to tell. This makes cats more cautious and can change behavior.

Set out some more food for him, and put a water bowl out too, he could use some help.

someone probably beat the crap out of him for deficating in their flower bed! Cats should be kept indoors and not allowed to run at large. If you like the cat get him indoors, take him to the vet, get him nuetered and look after him. Do you really think he needs his equiptment and free run to be happy? nope, he needs good food, someone to pet him, a warm, cosey, safe environment to cuddle up in and the sure knowledge that he is safe.
