Well, we took my daughter when she was 1. There a lots of things in our town to do around Halloween that are kid friendly and safe. We have tons of safe trick or treating as well around neighborhood businesses as well. We took our little girl with some friends and their kids around the neighborhood. It was a quiet and safe place not a lot of cars and traffic going on. Also places like malls usually do safe trick or treating. We take her to families as well so they could see her and give her treat. Taking our daughter out when she was 1 really got me and my husband back into the spirit as well, we both dress up and have some fun too. Who cares if your 1 year old can't eat the candy really, it's all about the fun in it and getting in the spirit of it. Our daughter is almost 3 and yet again me and Daddy will be dressing up getting into the spirit again with her.
And places with older people who don't get many visitors. It always puts a smile on their faces to see the little ones dressed up since they may not have anyone to come visit and things.

A nursing home. The elderly would love to see the little one, and you will get a small amount of candy, which is plenty for a one year old. Call around and find out if any in your area are offering trick or treat activities.

One is really too young to trick or treat. If you really want to take your child, then I would say just a few houses. Your parents, maybe your best friend and your neighbor. A one year old is too young to be eating candy and they won't remember it anyway. If you can't resist dressing them up in a costume, then dress them up and take a picture, but I would skip the trick or treating.

If you MUST trick or treat with a one year old, then take the child to the grandparents or other relative --just one or two places where they will make a big fuss over how cute he or she looks and you can get some pictures. Then go home and enjoy the kids knocking on the door!
At that age, he or she will just be bewildered by the whole thing and possibly frightened by costumes on other kids.

Trot around your local mall. Most stores will have a few candies for the kids, but at 1 it is more about you showing off your costumed little angel, so do it in style and maybe at the mall have a picture taken as a memory and send the candy to daddy's work in the morning. Good luck and enjoy the day!

Home.
Your one-year-old needs candy for what reason?
It's more about showing off the adorable baby in a costume, so I'd stick with friends and family's homes, and maybe the mall (most have trick-or-treating) or a trunk-or-treat event.

I took my one year old to a nursing home. She was happy to get out of the house and see new things and it made the folks in the nursing home happy to see a cute little girl. She got a little bit of candy which I put up in a safe place. I think I gave her maybe a small piece every now and again.
I did hold her hand the entire time and made sure no one held her or touched her in case of a senile person.
