What makes it unique as a topic? Why the hostility to being questioned?

Probably because a lot of their self-worth and self-identity is based on their religious affilitation.

I know some people who react the same way if you diss the Chargers, even though they never lived in San Diego or even California. I know some people who react that way if you say you drive a Ford just because their daddies told them Chevrolets were better.

Go figure.

Where people feel? Are most given to emotion? That is the downfall of every man and woman. We all give into emotion.
And because of emotions and ideas in religion people look for respect and reverence. It is not about me or you or anyone else for that matter. It is about Jesus Christ and he is to be respected and reverenced. Not men. God said do not put our trust in man. Men and women change according to their feelings and emotions. That is Why any religion formed by men may be here today and gone tomorrow. God has been here since the beginning and all the rest will be gone in the end. God is a unique topic. And in him hostility will end.

Religion is deeply personal, which is why people are so sensitive on the issue. People have reasons why the believe the way they do, and some people feel like they are being intruded upon or feel that it is negative criticism/doubting/making fun for someone to ask questions, even if it's something innocent like being asked what it is or why. Some people just misconstrue or read in too deeply others' questions/comments about their religious beliefs and therefore end up getting offended and angry.

Just as an outside observer, it's easy to see that the same questions keep being asked over and over again, and so, it gets boring and annoying or something. It seems atheists who don't believe need some kind of remedial, special class to understand what Christians accept naturally. Its really no different with other subjects either. Scientists, authors, lawyers or professionals from any field for that matter just do not take kindly to or have respect for people who obviously do not have respect for the work they do.

Because the subject is so dear to the heart. Each person takes their religion so very personally. It is important to them that their religion be treated with respect and honor. That their personal beliefs not be questioned or belittled.

And when they are they feel like you are not only attacking their religion but you are attacking their beliefs and in a way attacking them.

They feel like you are belittling them for believing the way they do...in a sense calling them stupid or ignorant.

It is, Im afraid the same with a persons politics...these two subjects seem to go hand in hand.

That is why I tease my Christian friends, but I seriously know when and where to draw the line...so as not to offend. And they the same with me. I have seen friendships end over disagreements over religion. Its sad but true. I even once saw a marriage end when the bride suddenly became a Christian and the groom stayed disinterested in religion. They divorced after less then a year of marriage. All because he would not become a Christian. She said she could not stay married to a man who lived in constant sin. And she left him.

As a Wiccan Clergy member I have seen my fair share of religious intolerance. And its not pretty. My personal feeling is if you cannot say anything nice about someones religious choice, then simply say nothing.

Blessings,
Aviana

look at a person who has bullied their way into respect.... whether it's a teacher, principle, police officer, politician, even a doctor... you know the type.. I'm better than you... if you don't shut up I will punish you... often one who has more money... so they buy power..... these people except for a position of authority... now we see this clearly while going through schools... teachers and principles... they don't even like kids... they just like to be able to bully someone.... well this is how religions are... they gained power throught actually murdering people... well we have laws of human conscience now... meaning laws that free us from their illusion of authority... just as we don't respect the bullies in our environment we should not hand over respect to bullies of the past.... Respect is something that must be earned and they may bully and they may buy... but they never earn our respect... they only work hard at promoting their position of "authority" ...

A persons religious beliefs are the most personal and intimate part of their being, even if it is Atheism. Our thoughts and beliefs are the one thing that no one else has the right to control. Our behaviour should fit social norms, but our relationship to God is between ourselves and God. The free world has guaranteed our right to religious freedom. Why should someone be degraded or hurt because of their beliefs? We have no right to control another in this area of their lives. By harassing, degrading and insulting a person you are infringing on their rights. It is intolerance and bigotry plain and simple.

A touchy topic is one that shelters a rainbow of beliefs. Religion and Spirituality are hot topics because we all have a unique and sometimes valuable perspective.
The hostility is lack of knowledge plus stubbornly clinging to current paradigms.

There might be some other topics where questioning is taboo... I can't think of any off the top of my head.

I think it's sort of an unwritten agreement that came out of the Enlightenment: You afford our religion reverence, and we'll not force it on you.

I sort of think religion's increased involvement in EVERYTHING should make criticism of it no longer taboo.

A person's religion is something they hold close to their heart and because there are so many questions without answers, pure faith is required and people do not like to have their beliefs challenged. People should be respectful of one another's belief system, however, we should all be a little more willing to "expand and enhance" our beliefs.

There is an element of self doubt, hence when someone criticizes it offends them because it shakes their belief and they dont want to see themselves as following something stupid. If we respect they feel validated on their beliefs.
