Bill W....I think you missed your last AA meeting. That was an elitist remark. If you can't answer the question then don't type anything at all.

As for the question: Aspen may be more your speed for skiing, but you'll also a lot at Vail in your ability zone. Vail might be cheaper than Aspen in the long run as hotels and bars in Aspen can be pricey. Vail also has more money to throw around because it has a lot of holdings...ergo, better deals. However, both are top-shelf ski towns that have a year-round resident population and that means you will be able to find a bar that serves draft beer for under $3 a pint.

I've still never been able to find a McDonalds in Aspen. It's either really well hidden or doesn't exist.

Hey, I understand what you mean. If you're looking for intermediate friendly runs, Steamboat Springs is the place to go. They're also known for having the BEST powder in North America. But the only draw back is that there's not too much of a night life going on there unless you live there and know people and can do stuff with them. A ski town with a better nightlife is gonna be Aspen. BUT, Aspen is known for being icey and not having all that great of snow. All ski resorts are going to have tip-top hotels with AMAZING service, so I wouldn't worry about that too much if I was you. You just have to choose which you'd rather have.... great skiing, but not a great nightlife, or crappy skiing, and a good nightlife. It's your decision, but if it's a trip for mainly skiing, do yourself a favor and go to Steamboat.

I hear that Blackcomb/Whistler is great - but Europe??? They do have good skiing - but it's no better than the US. They have some really big ski areas - but they are generally less user-friendly, not as easy to get around, not as convenient to ski all over the hill, and more likely to be foggy (esp. Switzerland).

Never been to Aspen - but have been to Vail. As stated above, Vail is big - lots of choices - Beaver Creek very nearby - Copper Mt., Breckinridge, Arapahoe, Keystone within easy driving distance - so if you get bored with one place - you can see more. I understand that Aspen is great - but not as large, and caters to a super-high-end crowd. Well, I suppose Beaver Creek does too, but you can just drive in there for a day from Vail. Beaver Creek has great steep terrain - and well maintained so an intermediate can ski it if you would like.

Vail and Snowmass at Aspen are both outstanding with many beautiful intermediate runs. Plan on having great skiing and spending a lot of money so unless you're fortunate enough to be rich make sure your credit cards are in good shape.

Aspen. Vail is nice, but it has over 5000 acres of skiable terrain. If you dont know the layout of the mountain, you will find yourself traversing cat-tracks all day long. Also, to get to the really good stuff, (Blue Sky Basin,) you are going to spend half your day getting back there and the other half gdetting back to the front. They brag about the back bowls there too, but if you dont have fresh snow in them they suck. Aspne gives you the choice of four mountains which are all easy to navigate, and Snowmass has some of the best groomers anywhere. The nightlife in Aspen is awesome. I alsway stay at the Pokolodi Lodge in Snowmass Village. Great transportation to and from all four mountains. Remember this: Snowmass for real skiing, and lots of terrain, Buttermilk for groomers and terrain park, Aspen Highlands for hike-to, massive bowls and steeps, and Aspen for, well its Aspen, enough said.

personally i prefer Vail to Aspen. Vail is huge and caters to skiers and boarders of all skill levels....Beaver Creek is also nearby....Aspen/Snomass is also nice.....both Vail and Aspen are a bit pricier compared to other resorts out here like Steamboat, Arapahoe Basin, Copper Mountain, Keystone, Winter Park, Breckenridge, etc. it's more about personal preference.....Vail and Aspen are both major resorts and there will always be something to do in the area....plus both resorts have great transportation services to and from the slopes and such....

snow.com has some info on Vail and some of the other resorts i mentioned as well as passes.

aspensnowmass.com has info on the obvious

oh and.....real skiers go wherever they want....i board all over Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming and i hope to get to Switzerland this spring.....as long as there's snow i don't think anyone is justified in saying where real skiers go....Colorado is fantastic.....as long as you're doing it so you can have fun....hope this helps and i hope you're trip goes well....have a blast....I'll be out there too.....peace.....

Aspen - stay at Snowmass Village! I went in 2004 and our whole family had a great time - easy transport to the town of Aspen as well as super easy slope access. Enjoy!
