...like the ones you find at Wal-mart. I think that the costumes they have for older children are cheaply made and over priced. Do you agree or disagree?

I agree. They only wear them for one night. When we were kids, my brother and I usually came up with or made our own (pumpkin leaf bags to be a pumpkin, jeans, flannel shirt, boots, cowboy hat to be a cowboy, mismatched clothes, a colorful wig and some facepaint to be a clown, a box and tinfoil to be a robot, toilet paper to be a mummy, a black towel, shirt, skirt and witch's hat to be a witch, red shirt, blue pants, red towel and some masking tape (to make the emblem on the shirt) to be a super hero, one year my brother even dressed up in some of my clothes and a yarn wig to be a girl). I did buy my 2 year old daughter a costume this year, but otherwise, I think it's just best to be creative and use what you have on hand, like you said, otherwise they are over priced and cheaply made, and unless your child likes playing dress-up, they'll only be worn for a few hours for one day!

As far as Walmart goes, of course its cheaply made, that's just par for the course for any of their clothing items. But Halloween costumes really only have to hold up for a little bit so it shouldn't matter too much if they fall apart after 5 hours of use. Over-priced, most definitely. You can shop around at other stores and online and find much better deals (and higher quality). But my biggest complaint would be that they're much too thin. I got my son the spider man costume when he was 18 months old, layering clothes under it made it look weird and putting a jacket over it made it so you couldn't see the costume. The next year I got him a Goliath costume from the Disney store, I found a great sale that made it only $5 more than a Walmart costume and it was head to toe warm enough to stand up to the cold.

I'm quite sure they are overpriced and cheaply made for a variety of reasons. The most important reason (retail-wise speaking) is that Halloween is a one day out of 365. Costumes more likely than not will not fit the wearer again next year much less want to be worn again. Parents will pay only so much and the retailers know this. They keep their price at that point. These costumes are not expected to last.

yes, but we were guilty of buying the store bought costumes this year. Short on time and stuff. It's just easier to pick something up from the store than to be original and make your own. When my son was little though he always had a homemade costume. Of course I was a stay at home mom then, now I go to school and work full time. So in the interest of time we went store bought this year. But you're right, they are WAY overpriced.

I, myself, prefer to make my kids costumes unless I can do like I did this year and find them (really nice ones) at Goodwill cheaper than I can make them. My daughter's Dorothy dress was handmade and donated after the wearer used it. My son's lion costume was exquisitly made commercially. But both costumes cost me a grand total of seven dollars all together. Before this year, though, I have always made my children's costumes.

The costumes for older children have always been cheap, but not necessarily overpriced. It's up to you to actually look at stores with the quality that you are looking for. You are trying to find champagne at a beer joint.

Yeah, but that is true for most other things Wal-Mart sells, too. Probably has lead in it if it is made in China, too, which is like 99% of their inventory.

I agree - but in a pinch you pay....that's what they bank on. I ordered my daughters online this year - it was like $12 including shipping and it's a witch costume and hat...very nice quality.

Oh yeah, its a totally monopoly. They know people dont have time to make their own costumes anymore. We buy them.

So they make them as cheap as possible, and we pay 30 times the amount it took to make it! lol

I completely agree!
