The simple quest for information is not wrong, the question is what methods are to be employed in this quest and whether the information gathered would be used for an immoral outcome.

For example, an ultrasound is a perfectly safe (although not 100% accurate) method if determining a baby's sex. No problem.

Amniocentesis, however, is associated with a higher risk of miscarriage (whether that is because it is mainly used in high-risk pregnancies, or actually is that dangerous, is open for debate). Would you risk your baby's life to find out its sex? That would seem to be wrong - the risk is not outweighed by any benefit.

Now, do you intend to use the information for an immoral purpose? I.e. you want a boy, if it's a girl you're going to abort - that's just wrong.

Assuming you're just curious, however, and the information is being gathered by routine, safe methods (or your doctor wants a less safe method because of other risk factors that you're not telling us) then no, there would be nothing wrong with finding out the baby's sex, no matter how "Catholic" you are.

Sure, I'll explain, but I'm not Catholic. Using birth control prevents babies from being born or more simply interrupts or disrupts God's plan. This is different from abstinence. Abstinence is part of God's plan as well. If you are not married then not having sex is in God's plan. God wants children (from a Catholic stand point) from two married people that have sex. If you are married, but not having sex, you are not using birth control either. The natural extension of married sex is child birth and putting a wall up is thwarting what God intended. Abstinence is a whole other subject. Not everyone is supposed to have sex and make children, but to Catholics every married couple that has sex should let the possibility for God to give them a child be open.

There have always been ways of 'knowing' a baby's sex before birth. Today we are accurate.

I don't see why people believe so many aspects of life are sin. I know that most Catholics go against the Pope and the Church regarding prevention of pregnancy with the use of condoms. It really is insane that in a world of starving people pregnancy prevention wouldn't glorified.

I know of no Catholic teaching that encourages or discourages finding out an unborn baby's gender as long as there is no injury to the baby or the mother.

Some parents may make terrible decisions based on the information discovered. China has many sex-selection abortions of girls. Here is a story: http://www.lifenews.com/nat2370.html

With love in Christ.

I am not Catholic so maybe you have some rule I don't know about. However I can't see any reason why it would be wrong.

No, unless you would be planning on aborting it if it's not your desired gender. There's nothing sinful about finding out the gender since even if you choose not to know, your doctors all will and so will the tech giving you your ultrasound. If you don't want to know the sex though, tell him or her that fast because I didn't want to know and the tech blurted it out before I could finish my sentence. Good luck with your baby!

It's not wrong.

Although I must say, when I didn't know, it made pushing the baby out easier (psychologically) because I was so anxious to find out.

It's really fun to find out as the baby is being born, the "old-fashioned" way.

Though not a Catholic I feel that there is nothing wrong with it unless it is with plans to eliminate it and have a boyu instead. Regarding IMACatholic 2 answers regarding Chinese babies is true but that is due to the preference for a boy. The governent here is trying to eliminate that habit and instill a more fair one that prefers favors either sex. On another somewhat related note, Pope Benedict said that if the baby is determined to be homosexual they should try to change its orientation as long as the babys life is respected. Sounds too much like eugenics and tampering with nature to me.

Its fine to want to know, I didn't want to know and that is my choice.. so I like surprises :-)
The only reason it would be wrong is if you found out what sex it is and didn't want that sex for your child and aborted it because it was the wrong type. They do that in China.

The Church holds no moral objections against knowing the baby's sex before he or she is born.
