actions speak louder than words. if he wants to remain friends, then he will act like it. he won't flirt or make a move, but he will want to hang out casually. if he doesn't want to be friends, then he won't put effort into it. some say it to soften the blow, others really mean it. some really want to be your friend while others use it as an excuse to keep you around if they don't find some one else. just see how he acts - that will help. good luck.

It depends on why the two of you broke up. He could mean that, I have several ex's that I am still friends with. But he could also just be saying it to not hurt you.

Yes he does mean it. Chances are you two got along, but weren't necessarily right for each other as mates. He likes you, and doesn't want to lose his ties with you, but doesn't necessarily see you working out as lovers. Be his friend, you could benefit from that greatly down the road as well as he could. Good friends are hard to come by, harder than lovers.

Shelby, Sweety, I have had a couple of women say that and I no longer see or talk with them. But I am a shut-in. Perhaps since you are out there you will be "just friends"!

I think sometimes they do. And other times they are just trying to make themselves feel better. Putting a band-aid on the situation.
Make sure you arn't letting him have the milk without the cow!

It means he wants to see someone else, and he hopes your not going to make him suffer every time he sees you. Which would mean you can NOT still be friends.

I think they mean that the relationship isn't really going where he wants it to go, but he still wants to be around you, and maybe even date at a later time.

He'll maybe mean it at the time he says it but it doesn't mean he'll really stay your friend. Sometimes they do, but I wouldn't count on it to much.

It sort of goes both ways. sometimes they mean it and some times they don't i guess it depends on the situation.
