some say it's anti-religious, others say it's fantasy... but I, frankly speaking, do not understand all the fuss, it's just a BOOK and a MOVIE

Oy, Bettie. Prepare yourself for countless questions about it.

The Golden Compass is part of a trilogy of books called the His Dark Materials series. They take place in a world that is very much like our world was in the Middle Ages, and thus are very critical of organized religion. They also portray God in a very negative light. That's why Christians are freaking out about it.

Funny thing is, most of them haven't attempted to read them for themselves.

I read the books, and I like them. They've been around for awhile and have been largely ignored by fundamentalists, but now that there's a movie being made they're all up in arms about it.

Also it's a new drinking question. So thanks!

Is there an outcry against this one now too? Just more people freaking out about a book because it uses fantasy to expose some corruption in religion and society. And features child who must learn to seek truth for herself.

I'm only half way through reading it, and it is a pretty good fantasy, vivid descriptions but the plot moves a bit slowly for the boys.

The author of the book is an atheist and some thinks it promotes atheism, but personally I agree with whoever said it was just a book and soon to be a movie. Parents should be able to tell their children their own beliefs and then when the children are old enough they can make their own choices on what to believe, hopefully not based on a movie or book unless it's the bible.

OMG its just a bunch of noise perpetrated by a bunch of "close minded" folk.....much like all the people who threw a fit about the Harry Potter movies! They are saying it promotes atheism or something! Geez! Whatever!! Let the kids enjoy! Why must people have such a "hissy" over every little thing??? Good grief!!

Huh I didn't know either. Now of course, I'm going to have to go out and buy them all. Do they realize when they make a big fuss it's just free publicity? LOL

Oh, it's what we're all talking about this morning. It's atheist propaganda without the atheist propaganda. Better read about it on Fox News -- they always cover the persecution of Christians in the form of childrens movies that aren't banned:

It's a movie that "promotes atheism"

Cheers! (it's been added to the drinking game as well)

The author has admitted to wanting to destroy religion so you cant claim its the same as the Harry Potter controversy, but I will probably go to the movie.
