It's part of a series of books called the His Dark Materials trilogy. The books take place in a world very similar to our medieval times when it comes to organized religion, thus it's very critical of it. It paints the Yahweh God in a negative light, and I assume that's why so many Christians are offended by it.
They're fantasy books. In the books polar bears can talk, witches fly around on brooms, and people's souls are embodied outside of themselves as animal companions. It's not reality. That's why I get confused that so many Christians get so upset about it.
I'm a Christian, and I love to read. I liked these books, and for that reason I'll see the movie. So many Christians are making judgments on the movie without actually being informed beyond chain letters and Snopes articles.
If you're looking for answers, I encourage you to read the book. Maybe you'll be for it, maybe you'll be against it, but at least your opinion will actually be your own.

The movie is based on a book of the same name. The book is the first book in a trilogy by an English author named Philip Pullman, who is a militant atheist.
The book is full of slams against religion in general and Christianity in particular. The movie, from what I've read, does not really contain the anti-religion themes -- but it could lure parents into buying the books for their kids, and the books are heavily anti-Christian. They're anti-Catholic especially.
Google some of Pullman's interviews, and you'll see that he's on a mission to spread atheism and anti-Christianity. His books are one way he does that.

Because it's part of an insidious plot by The Atheists to brainwash children into becoming followers of The No-God.

Heaven forbid a movie with atheist leanings. I wonder if the same people that are pissed about Golden Compass were up in arms about people taking their children to see "The Passion of the Christ".

Evidently the author is a vehement atheist and wrote the books as an "anti" Narnia series. When I read them, I never got that impression, so I'm not sure why people are worked up.

The funny thing is, it's now a big deal since people feel the need to talk about it.

It is a fantasy movie, in which a fictional Catholic Church is abusing power. It is on par with Christians hating Harry Potter for promoting witchcraft. Their opposition is silly to logical adults.

That is what is freaking some christian people out.
It still looks like a good entertaining movie to me and I love Nicole Kidman so I plan to see it.
The author did admit to wanting to destroy religion, so its not really the same as the Harry Potter issue.

Not for children, if you don't want them exposed to witchcraft.
That is why.
Christians know that they are to have NOTHING to do with witch craft, in the Bible that they, the Christians say they follow, it is forbidden, so if you say you are Christian and follow the witch craft, maybe you want to untie your self from that label, that is why every one cries hypocrite-because of the 'worldly christian' followers.
Why the thumbs down? What I said is true in the eyes of a Christian.

Obviously...If she watches the Saw movies, and doesn't like the Golden Compass, she just has bad taste in movies. If she doesn't like it, it's probably good.
