I love being a student nurse for many reasons such as :

1, The patients

2, The staff on the wards

3, Getting experience.

It seems like I am moaning but I have assignments to do and

have to work so much like another person has to do in their

job. However when I work weekends I get no extra pay. Does

that seem fair? I think student nurses should be paid for the

job they do not a set bursary amount. I too have to pay bills

and rent to pay. But now I will need to get a part-time job to

help pay the bills. God I feel like am moaning can anyone

reassure me or is anyone going through the same thing.

Thank you

Kitty,

You are a student, if you are paid anything it is more than most nursing students in this country. The average nursing student puts in all the study and work hours and builds up student loans, gets money from their parents works or all of the above to get through school.

When I went through my RN program, I worked part time as a Pharmacy Technician, part time as an OR Tech, had an athletic scholarship to pay tuition and put in all the hours for nursing school. The whole idea is... you get the education so you can make a living and take care of your family later.

Incidentally, I also went back to school, obtained a Masters Degree and then got my Doctoral Degree. Nobody paid me anything from the school. I paid them tuition, except when I was on an athletic scholarship. And to keep that I put in 8 hours a day training for the team. You do what you have to do to get your education.

I was a qualified nurse for 11 years. When I started my nurse training and when we started working on the wards we worked like newly qualified nurses, giving out drugs, being left in charge of the ward, basically working full time whilst studying as well. As we worked more than 18 hours a week, we weren't entitled to an NUS card, paid full poll tax (council tax), full fares on public transport and didn't get extra money for working nights, weekends or public holidays. Unfortunately nursing does not pay great money and there are few benefits. Nursing is a vocation, as I'm sure you know and it has its good and bad points. I loved my job immensely and got huge satisfaction from it but after 11 years I decided I couldn't put up with the beurocracy and backstabbing that goes on, particularly in ward settings.
I wish you all the best for the future and hope you enjoy your career in nursing. I don't want to put you off with what I've just written. It is a rewarding career which can offer you lots of opportunities.
Good Luck!!

The way the US government regards illegal immigration is a joke. Some politicians are more concerned about their voter base, regardless if it means passing laws that support illegal aliens. But the tide seems to be changing, especially with the new congress. The majority of Americans welcome legal immigration, but detest those who come here illegally. As for health care being free, it's not free per se. But it's unlikely illegal aliens are paying hospital and doctor bills. Their children do get an education and free meals at school. Their anchor babies are "citizens" and that qualifies them for government assistance. It may be after 2012 before we can see some sanity returned to Washington, and then we will need a president who will take a stand against illegal immigration.

student nurses on our ward are used as slave labour. they frequently get the evening and weekend shifts so that the ward does not have to pay the unsocial hours to auxiliary staff. you should register with a nursing agency as an auxiliary, they pay quite good money and a few night shifts every month would ease your financial worries.

Surely you were aware of all this before you took the course on?
I'm not having a go, it is just that it's all there in black and white before you take it up.
